Modulo 1000 - Nao Fale Com Paredes (remastered W/ 8 Bonus Tracks)
Brazil s late 60s Tropicalia movement where electric instruments and current pop was merged with local music has been recognised as one of the most vital, exciting music scenes in the world. Modulo 1000 took it even further on their 1970 album N?o Fale Com Paredes (Don t Talk To Walls). RPM International s reissue of N?o Fale Com Paredes shows that Tropicalia was part of the story Brazil was the home to even freakier music. Although influenced by Led Zeppelin and Steppenwolf, Modulo 1000 sounded like no one else. Raw and exotic, Modulo 1000 pitched heavy guitars against songs influenced by psychedelia. On a line between progressive and hard rock, Modulo 1000 still sounded Brazilian. RPM International s special, band-approved issue of their only album is supplemented by all the tracks Modulo 1000 recorded for singles and rare compilation albums. Founder member Daniel Romani has been interviewed for the package.

The 13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds Of...(limited Edition 2-cd Hardcover)
Forget about San Francisco: The American capitol of psychedelic rock was Austin, Texas, and no band soared higher than Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators. In addition to acid-tinged garage rockers such as the crazed-love anthem, "You're Gonna Miss Me," the Elevators' debut included tracks such as "Reverberation (Doubt)," "Roller Coaster," and "Splash 1," which viscerally evoked the sounds of their titles while offering lyrics that provided a philosophical structure for the psychedelic experience. The lyrics were written by Tommy Hall, who also played amplified jug. Hard as it may be to believe now, that jug created a weird sound that predicted that burbling synthesizers of modern-day techno. --Jim Derogatis "The fearless trailblazers of psychedelia and one of the most kick-ass rock bands ever... Yardbirds - Little Games (remastered Mono Edition)
By the time Jimmy Page joined the Yardbirds in 1966, the group was already firmly established as one of the era's most innovative and creatively adventurous British bands. The addition of Page allowed the band's heady mix of blues and psychedelia to coalesce into an edgy approach that laid the stylistic groundwork for Page's next band, Led Zeppelin (who were known as the New Yardbirds in their early days). The Yardbirds' 1967 release Little Games--produced by noted British pop guru Mickie Most--is the band's only album to be recorded entirely with Page as a member, and the only one to feature the group's final lineup of Page and founding members Keith Relf, Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty. Little Games is also a transitional effort that finds the Yardbirds delving into an array of sounds and styles, from gritty blues-rock ("Drinking Muddy Water") to swirling psychedelia ("Glimpses") to introspective balladry ("Only the Black Rose"). Several of the album's tracks can now be seen as sonic blueprints for Led Zeppelin, e.g. "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor" and "Glimpses," both of which feature the distinctive guitar-bowing technique for which Page would soon become famous. Page's acoustic instrumental showcase "White Summer" would later become a frequent feature of Led Zeppelin's live performances. The album also features Page's future Zep bandmate John Paul Jones on bass, cello and string arrangements, along with guest appearances by UK session aces Nicky Hopkins and Clem Cattini. Sundazed Music's new CD and LP editions of Little Games have been sourced from the original UK mono masters.

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues (double Lp Vinyl Set W/ Oversized Poster)
Engineered and mixed by Phil Ek and co-produced by Phil and the band, the new Fleet Foxes record is called Helplessness Blues. Recording for Helplessness Blues began in April 2010 at Dreamland Recording in Woodstock, NY and continued off and on through November of that same year back in Seattle at numerous studios, including Bear Creek, Reciprocal Recording and Avast. Like very nearly every worthwhile thing, making this album was not easy; it was a difficult second album to make. Drawing inspiration from folk/rock from about 1965 to 1973, and Van Morrison s Astral Weeks in particular, Helplessness Blues sees Fleet Foxes heighten and extend themselves, adding instrumentation (clarinet, the music box, pedal steel guitar, lap steel guitar, Tibetan singing bowls, vibraphone, etc., along with more traditional band instrumentation), with a focus on clear, direct lyrics, and an emphasis on group vocal harmonies. We have it on good authority that the album is called Helplessness Blues for at least a couple of reasons. One, it's kind of a funny title. Secondly, one of the prevailing themes of the album is the struggle between who you are and who you want to be or who you want to end up, and how sometimes you are the only thing getting in the way of that. Having heard Helplessness Blues, we mean to get out of its way. Something remarkable is going on here and its great to watch and listen. Two observations to start with, if as suggested in the music press that Fleet Foxes main man Robin Pecknold has poured his heart and soul into their second album "Helplessness blues" it has paid off and this not only equals their great debut but surpasses it. The second reflection is that New Musical Express has given this album a paltry two stars in a hideously awful review from an increasingly irrelevant music magazine. This in itself should encourage you to buy it since "Helplessness blues" is a triumphant classic and while its stays firmly within the orbit of harmony heavy folk rock of "Ragged Wood" it marks a substantial and mature progression for this Seattle band. This is particularly pronounced in terms of Pecknold's songwriting skills which take off into the stratosphere and the band produce some of the greatest soaring harmony singing this side of Simon and Garfunkel's "Bookends" and the great debut by Crosby, Stills and Nash. Start with the brilliant title track. This song is divided into two parts firstly a introspective set of lyrics by Pecknold leads to a vocal tour de force which at 2.58 then moves into a sublime Fleet Foxes harmony workout. It is easily one of the best songs released this year but is matched on the album but equally bold contributions. "Sim Sala Bim" is delightful haunting folk song which splits into two parts with the CSN influence especially pronounced in its forceful second part. The reflective opener "Montezuma" sees Pecknold in a pensive mood questioning, "So now I am older/Than my mother and father/, When they had their daughter/Now what does that say about me" over almost warm religious style harmonies. It contrasts with the joyous "Battery Kinzie" probably the song that could have sat most happily on their debut. The albums centerpieces are two episodic songs of which first up is "The Plains/Bitter Dancer" a six minute journey containing some of the albums best harmonies and the albums longest track "The Shrine/An argument" a sort of baroque "Paranoid Android' with a powerful vocal by Pecknold which takes us on a journey from folk to a wig out free jazz conclusion. It is stirring perfection and will take audiences by storm on the forthcoming UK tour. Other highlights include "Lorelai" which owes a huge debt to one of Dylan's best but not always most heralded songs "4th Time Round" from "Blonde on Blonde". Then there is the intriguing instrumental "Cascades", the slightly jazzy "Bedouin Dress" and two of the most gorgeous songs Pecknold has penned. First the lush "Something to admire" and the truly sublime sparse acoustics of "Blue Spotted Tail" where we can forgive Pecknold's "hippy" affectations for the wonderful sweet yearning which underpins it. The whole thing is topped off with the cherry on the cake that is "Grown Ocean" which was the highlight of the set they performed on Jools Holland with Pecknold's voice cracking as the songs pace picked up and surged. It starts with him announcing "In that dream I'm as old as the mountains/Still is starlight reflected in fountains/Children grown on the edge of the ocean/Kept like jewellery kept with devotion". It builds to a massive acoustic crescendo with the band firing on all cylinders and concludes with a gentle verse. It is a fitting ending to an album, which sees the band radically redefine as oppose to reinvent their sound, but by doing so build on the brilliance of their debut and actually "outpunch" it. This album is a flashbulb moment for music in 2011. It sets down an American benchmark for others to aspire towards, in the same way that PJ Harvey's "Let England Shake" has done in the UK. God knows how the Fleet Foxes follow this album (although we thought that after "Ragged Wood" and the "Sun Giant EP") for as it stands "Helplessness Blues" is the sound of rock music redemption.(red on black)

Group 1850 - Agemo's Trip To Mother Earth ( + 9 Bonus Tracks)
Group 1850 was a psychedelic rock band from Holland, considered by many to be one of the finest acid rock acts Europe has ever produced. The band was founded in 1964 in Hague by the name Klits and renamed Group 1850 in 1966, when their debut single, Misty Night / Look Around, appeared on the tiny Yep label. Though few copies were pressed, it established them as one of Holland's most original bands (alongside the Outsiders and Q65) and they soon signed to Philips. More singles ensued, in a highly psychedelic vein, including the brilliant Mother No Head. Their debut album, Agemo's Trip To Mother Earth, appeared in late 1968. In Holland its sleeve had a 3-D image on the cover, and came with a pair of 3-D glasses (copies with the glasses unperforated are especially prized today). The album's concept is incomprehensible, but its superb songs and musicianship have ensured its lasting cult reputation, and it has been called by more then one "psych-heads" " one of the most truly psychedelic albums ever recorded".

The Move - Looking On ( Remastered 1970 Album + 7 Bonus Tracks)
2008 digitally remastered and expanded edition of The Move's third album featuring seven bonus tracks, including previously unreleased and rare material. Looking On features the Roy Wood-penned Hard Rock singles 'Brontosaurus' and 'When Alice Comes Back To The Farm'. Released in late 1970, the third Move album and the first to feature Jeff Lynne, found the band at the peak of their musical imagination. Often regarded as the "joker in the pack" in The Move's catalogue, with several heavy, Progressive Rock epics, Looking On can also be seen as the most relaxed and confident expression of the maverick Roy Wood re-energized by a partnership with new creative foil and similarly talented songwriter Lynne, formerly of Birmingham underground favorites The Idle Race. Together they reveled in the freedoms available to the late '60s pop musician, employing a wide array of instruments and production ideas. 1. Looking On 2. Turkish Tram Conductor Blues 3. What? - The Move, Lynne, Jeff 4. When Alice Comes Back to the Moon 5. Open Up Said the World at the Door - The Move, Lynne, Jeff 6. Brontosaurus 7. Feel Too Good 8. Michael Hurley (with The Unholy Modal Rounders & More) - Have Moicy! (180 Gram Vinyl Lp)
This is an amazing, unique album. It certainly isn't country or blue-grass. The only way to describe it is hillbilly. every song is different. The miriad of band members take the lead in writing and performing. On some songs they all perform, on others only a few. Every song stands up well un it's own merits. There's something I can't pin down that makes this album such an awesome and memorable listening experience. This review nails part of it: "Have Moicy! is like attending a lively jam in a small bar in the middle of nowhere. It's such a warm album that invites you in with it's heartwarming tracks and colourful performers." However, I feel that doesn't quite highlight the fact that the musicians in the bar are incredibly talented and that the melodies will stick and bounce around for weeks and weeks to come. It's played tongue-in-cheek, but they're earnest while doing so. Furthermore, it's unique. It's an escape from everything else in my library whenever I need it. In short, it's a very very special record. (rodericday, rym)

The Amboy Dukes (with Ted Nugent) - Journey To The Center Of The Mind (180 Gram Vinyl Lp)
With it's classic period piece cover art (amazing that it wasn't banned), 1968's "Journey To the Center of the Mind" was released in the wake of a series of personnel changes that saw original keyboardist Rick Lober and bassist Bill White respectively replaced by Andy Soloman and Greg Arama. In spite of the personnel turnover musically the album wasn't a major change in direction. With Steve Farmer and Ted Nugent again providing the majority of material (working apart and together), the album bounced between white-boy R&B ('Mississippi Murderer') and a distinctive hard psych sound ('Surrender To Your Kings', 'Flight of the Byrd' and ''Dr. Slingshot). Farmer seemed particularly drawn to psychedelia and side two numbers like 'Why Is A Carrot More Orange Than An Orange' and 'Missionary Mary' should appeal to psych fans. Among the odder efforts was the Nugent penned instrumental 'Scottish Tea' which stood as a precursor of his forthcoming solo career. it's actually far better than you'd expect, especially for a set that was reportedly recorded in five days on an eight track recorder. The unsubtle title track's a hoot, made even funnier by the fact that co-writer Nugent remains steadfast in claiming ignorance of the theme ... in a couple of interviews he's been quoted as saying "I thought 'Journey to the Center of the Mind' meant look inside yourself, use your head, and move forward in life". Wonder what he thought the drug paraphernalia on the cover was about. "Journey To the Center of the Mind" track listing: (side 1) 1.) Mississippi Murderer (Ted Nugent - Steve Farmer) - 2.) Surrender To Your Kings (Ted Nugent) - 3.) Flight Of The Byrd (Ted Nugent) - 4.) Scottish Tea (instrumental) (Ted Nugent) - 5.) Dr. Slingshot (Ted Nugent - Steve Farmer) - (side 2) 1.) The Guess Who - Shakin' All Over! (remastered)
Sundazed's Shakin' All Over! is naturally a godsend for dedicated Guess Who fans, presenting a 24-track summary of the group's recordings between 1963 and 1967, all taken from the original master tapes for the first time. This alone, along with the originally unissued "Use Your Imagination" and "Just a Matter of Time" and John Einarson's liner notes make this a fine fan package, but what makes this more than just a for-fans-only release is that the music is quite good. It is true that some of it is a little generic in the sense that they were a North American band finding their voice by turning out British-styled pop/rock, both in the driving Animals sense and the melodic Merseybeat style. It's very clear at certain points they're still developing their style, including their taste in covers, but they generally sound very appealing, both when they rock hard and when they indulge in candy-coated melodies. In fact, they can rock pretty damn hard, not just on the title song, but on another Johnny Kidd cover called "Baby Feelin'," Johnny Otis' "Tuff E Nuff," Randy Bachman's great "Believe Me" (which sounds a bit like early MC5) and "It's My Pride," plus Burton Cummings' fine "If You Don't Want Me," while on the other end of the spectrum, Bachman's instrumental British Invasion tribute "Made in England' is pretty endearing, as is the sweet (albeit dippy) "Stop Teasing Me" and the pretty cover of Neil Young's "Flying on the Ground is Wrong." (Young, in the liner notes, claims Bachman was an early influence, and it's not only possible to hear that, he's absolutely right that Bachman was quite a guitarist.) In one sense, this is a specialist release, since it will only appeal to Guess Who freaks and '60s guitar band fanatics, but it will satisfy both camps equally. 1. Shakin' All Over 2. Tuff E Nuff 3. I'd Rather Be Alone 4. All Right 5. Baby Feelin' 6. You Know He Did 7. Believe Me 8. Clock on the Wall 9. It's My Pride 10. If You Don't Want Me 11. Baby's Birthday 12. Made in England 13. Denny King - Evil Wind Is Blowing (1972 Album)
From Little Richard's label, here's a 1972 blues-rock album whose liner notes inform you that "you'll soon know why they call that place the high desert!" King's vocals are in a Beefheart-out-of-Howlin' Wolf mode, with Beefheart's high squeals and some very deep grunts and laughter. This is a very funny record, whether King is growling nonsensical gibberish on "Bottle Blues," proclaiming that he does "Lucille" better than Little Richard, or working the double meaning of "Boogie Man." Along with Beefheart, King makes me absolutely certain that this is the most apt vocal style for this type of music. Listen to King and realize that all those hard rock guys just don't have a clue. The album features cool harmonica and really hot slide guitar (courtesy of ex-Beefheart sideman Alex St. Claire.) The rhythm section is stellar too: check out the awesome bass line on "Sunday Driver". My pick hit is "Desert Sand," which starts with a lovely tapped-fretboard riff, has a wah-wah/slide guitar battle for a solo, and just plain feels like its title in a windstorm. You'll probably read about a hundred blues-rock albums here in the Archives. Most of them are full of fuzz guitar, freaky lyrics and psychedelic production tricks, but trust me, not a one of them is as good as this. This album includes ex Magic Band members Alex St Claire (guitar, trumpet and production), and Doug Moon (harmonica), plus former Exiles drummer Greg Hampton. One of the tracks is the "Sure Nuff n Yes I Do"/"New Minglewood Blues" riff all over again. And some of the vocals have an occasional nod towards a Beefheartian growl. Originally from Wisconsin Denny was in a number of groups before moving west.He died in April 2000 of a stroke/ heart attack - a rather humble and religious man. At the time of his death he had been working with some other musicians in his church in a band called The Watchmen.

Aardvark - Aardvark (remastered Esoteric Edition Of 1970 Album)
NEW REMASTERED EDITION D FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES OF THE 1970 ALBUM BY PROGRESSIVE ROCK GROUP AARDVARK, ORIGINALLY RELEASED ON THE DERAM NOVA LABEL. * BOOKLET WITH FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK & ESSAY. The band were an imaginative quartet comprising DAVID SKILLIN on Vocals, STEVE MILLINER on keyboards, STAN ALDOUS on Bass and FRANK CLARK on drums who came together in 1969. Driven by Steve Milliner's keyboard playing ability, Aardvark's only album was released in 1970 on Decca's short lived progressive imprint DERAM NOVA. One of the best albums released on NOVA, "Aardvark" features such outstanding pieces as the evocative `ONCE UPON A HILL', `MANY THINGS TO DO' and the powerful album closing track; `PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT'. A Truly Amazing LP from start to finish. it starts off with the song "Copper Sunset" a Hammond heavy groovy riff based tune, this type of stuff carries on through the cd until track 6 "The Outing - Yes", which starts off as an annoying little pop ditty (a'la Giles & fripp)before turning into a psychotic electro Hammond weirdo freak-out improv. The next song "Once Upon A Hill" is a nice quiet refrain obviously influenced by traditional English folk songs (Scarborough Fair, greensleeves). The Last track on the cd is "Put That In Your Pipe & Smoke It" which finishes this U.K. Prog Gem off nicely with another crazy freak-out improvisation. So if you like the sound of it and have a spare £70 to £100 go out and buy it on vinyl if not the cd is certainly a more viable option....(R. goldie)

Armaggedon (germany) - Armaggedon (remastered Esoteric Edition Of 1970 Album)
At one time this was an almost impossible album to obtain on physical medium (until a recent Esoteric re-issue) and certainly worth tracking down. Asbjornsen cites a Hendrix influence in his book on German Prog, "Cosmic Dream at Play" and whilst there is a nod to the great man, to my ears it is Peter Green that is written all over this superb blues/rock/prog outing, not only in Green's beautiful and fluid style of guitar work but also in the similar vocal style and tone. The similarity to classic period Spooky Tooth is born out by a wonderful rendition of "Better By You, Better Than Me". Like many Italian one-album bands of the time, this also leaves the listener wondering what might have been, had they made more albums. Musical audiences are a fickle lot. Countless awful bands achieve great longevity whilst many excellent and often far more able groups fall on stony ground and are consigned to the cess-pit of obscurity. Fabulous heavy Prog, highly recommended.(theworldof) Kuckuck was responsible for releasing many great albums in Germany in the early 1970s, including this sole album by the legendary Armaggedon. Not to be confused with other bands of the same name, the quartet comprised Frank Diez (lead guitar, vocals), Manfred Galatik (keyboards, bass guitar, vocals), Michael Nurnberg (bass& rhythm guitars) and Jurgen Lorenzen (drums, percussion). The album was one of the earliest issued on the Kuckuck imprint and was a fine hard progressive rock alb um with Frank Diez's guitar work inspired by the likes of Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix.

Quicksand - Home Is Where I Belong (remastered 1974 Album)
first ever official UK release of the self titled album by Welsh Progressive Rock outfit QUICKSAND. Hailing from Neath in South Wales, the band was the original group of bass guitarist WILL YOUATT who was to join fellow Welsh Prog Rockers MAN prior to the recording of the band's sole album for Pye Records' Progressive imprint, Dawn. Released in 1973, the line-up of QUICKSAND's only album was JIMMY DAVIES on guitar and vocals, PHIL DAVIES on bass and vocals, ROBERT COLLINS on organ, mellotron and vocals and ANTHONY STONE on drums and percussion. Whilst having some musical similarities with MAN, the music on QUICKSAND revealed the group to be fine song writers, with highlights including 'FLYING', 'TIME TO LIVE' and 'SEASONS / ALPHA OMEGA'.

The Sallyangie - Children Of The Sun (remastered 2-cd Set+ Bonustracks)
Remastered expanded edition of the sole album by THE SALLYANGIE, the duo featuring MIKE and SALLY OLDFIELD. Released by Nat Joseph's Transatlantic label in 1969, the album was the first vinyl outing for both musicians. Although embryonic folk influenced music, the album has an innocent charm which has endeared it to many collectors of late 1960s folk-rock and of the solo work of both MIKE OLDFIELD and SALLY OLDFIELD. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been remastered from the original master tapes and is expanded over two CDs to include EIGHT BONUS TRACKS, featuring the guitar improvisations 'Mrs. Moon and the Thatched Soup', 'Branches' and 'A Sad Song for Rosie', along with both sides of the 1969 single 'Colour of the World' b/w 'Two Ships' and the rare tracks (previously unreleased on CD) 'Child of Allah' and 'Lady Go Lightly', recorded in 1969 and released as a single by Philips Records in 1973.

Tudor Lodge - Tudor Lodge (remastered Esoteric Edition+ Bonus)
This Esoteric Recordings reissue restores the original album artwork and had been newly remastered from the original album master tapes. As an added bonus, this reissue includes the rare bonus track `THE GOOD TIMES WE HAD', the B-side of the band's only single. Once again Esoteric continue to mine the seams of those long lost treasures of yesteryear, presenting forgotten gems at affordable prices. Original LP copies of this 1971 album were known to fetch silly amounts of money; a combination of the sought after Vertigo `spiral' label, and the genuinely excellent contents within. Ostensibly an acoustic folk trio, they are augmented by the Pentangle rhythm section of Danny Thompson and Terry Cox among many other contributors, which gives a huge clue as to the level of musical accomplishment on show here. There are inevitable comparisons with Pentangle, but the trio of Lyndon Green, Ann Steuart and John Stannard are individual enough to make this a wonderful and beautifully recorded album full of truly memorable self-penned tunes and infused with that uniquely English rustic sound. Vocal duties are equally shared but Ann Steuart in particular, has a crystal clear voice which is well up there with her peers, and on the opening track `It All Comes Back To Me' it shines out amongst chiming acoustic guitars, double bass and flute. `Two Steps Back' is also a particularly fine example of a beautifully arranged timeless melody which delights the ears and recalls sweeter, simpler times. The album maintains a consistency, the guitar arrangements are beautiful and the trio is augmented by some 12 guest musicians adding their brush strokes along the way. This was seemingly an album made with much care and attention, although we are told the studio time only totalled two weeks... It is somewhat of a mystery that this album did not find a wider audience in it's own lifetime. A wonderful discovery which sounds fresh and assured and easily worth five stars. (STEVE DINSDALE)

Lol Coxhill - Ear Of The Beholder (remastered 2-cd Set- 1971 Album+ Bonus)
remastered edition of this album from the British saxophonist. Coxhill was a noted figure on the UK underground Jazz and Rock scene, his saxophone playing gracing recordings by Kevin Ayers, and later on acts such as Caravan. Recorded between July 1970 and January 1971, Ear Of The Beholder" gave Lol Coxhill the chance to produce a unique solo work which saw him touch various musical areas, including the Avant Garde, Jazz, Rock and more. Coxhill was assisted in the recording sessions by contributions from colleagues such as Ayers, Mike Oldfield and David Bedford. this review is for the new esoteric 2011 release of "ear of beholder". esoteric did another great job at remastering, and adding bonus material to this release. ear... has so many different styles going on, it's really an eceletic mix. the sound is so good, you can hear traffic driving by during some of the live recordings. most of the recordings is lol on saxophone. david bedford contributes to many of the songs also. avant garde, to 40s vaudevillian tunes, this solo recording has quite a variety of styles. what does add charm is of course the children added to a few songs. it is funny to hear children sing the "mango walk" and the full version of "i am a walrus" by the beatles. the bonus material are from two singles; the coxhill bedford duo doing an a&b side with "pretty little girl", from '71. the other single is a mix of will dandy & the dandylettes doing "sonny boy/oh mein papa" as "a"side and "b" side is another coxhill bedford duo doing "mood" which is the best track of the bonus material. aside from the bonus material, there are the original notes, plus current article written by sid smith, and an added Zig Zag magazine review from '71. a very enjoyable release if you are into avant garde type of saxophone music. The Byrds - The Complete Albums Collection (13-cd Box Set)
EU-only 13 CD box set containing the entire Sony catalog of one of Rock's most iconic bands, all housed in mini LP sleeves. Includes the albums Mr. Tambourine Man, Turn Turn Turn, Fifth Dimension, Younger Than Yesterday, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde, Ballad Of Easy Rider, Untitled, Byrdmaniax, Farther Along and more. Columbia/Legacy. Yet another collection of THE BYRDS, this time encompassing all their Columbia/Sony albums from the beginning through to the final dissolution of the band. This import contains each album in it's replica sleeve, plus a fairly nice booklet, all in one pretty substantial outer box-but, of course, the box will deteriorate some with use over time. The sound is comparable to the latest remastering done a while back. So don't think you're getting even newer editions sound-wise. A lot of great music for a relatively low price-a pretty good deal-if you don't own much of the band's music. Another good point is that some of the later albums are now out of print, and are more difficult to find new-and are fairly expensive. This set, along with the box set "Preflyte Sessions", full of early tracks, will give you an excellent overview of the band from beginning to end. At this juncture, I can't believe that anyone who likes THE BYRDS' music hasn't purchased one of several collections on the market, or the individual albums. But if for some reason you don't own much of this (mostly) fine music-this is worth a look-see. In one nice box is contained some of the best music from that era, from one of the best bands from that era. So if you want all THE BYRDS' music-good and bad-this would fill the bill nicely. One small personal point-if you don't own much of this music-I envy you. Gene Clark's songwriting (especially) was first rate, and the musicianship of the band (not just studio players) was very good. The vocals of both McGuinn and Clark (again, especially), along with Hillman and Crosby (while the latter three were in the band) make the songs come alive. In their career, THE BYRDS played folk, pop, folk-rock, rock, country, country-rock, and even a bit of gospel, jazz, and electronic music (the latter courtesy of McGuinn's fascination with outer space), and most of it was of a high caliber. Hearing this band grow and morph through the years is a very satisfying experience-and you'll have it all in one box set. Enjoy.(stuart jefferson)

The EP disc contains Kinksize Session, Kinksize Hits, Kweyt Kinks, and Dedicated Kinks while the final two discs contain various singles from around the world. Each CD is housed in a digipak, encased in a rigid Dansette style box to hold all the digipaks and book. Sanctuary. 2011. After The Beatles Mono set, all serious music buyers need to get this while they can. The sound is superb as is the packaging and content. It's essential for all British ears although from my experience some Amercians may not fully appreciate the English humour which is a throw-back to the grand old days of the music hall tradition and can be rather pointed. As for the music on each album, the last 4 are 5 star classics each, from "Face To Face" through "Arthur". The first two, "The Kinks" and "Kinda Kinks" are rather rudimentary and more basic stabs at American R 'n' B although "All The Day And All The Night" comes from this time as does "You've Really Got Me". These two albums are far more typical of the beat music style emanating from most of the groups of the initial 'British Invasion' of 1964. The third album, "Kinks Kontroversy", is the best of the earlier style and bridges the gap to the classic 'folk-rock' period that follows culminating in "Arthur", a true masterpiece about the decline of the British Empire! The only way this set might have been improved would have been if it had been printed in Japan, the home of true audiophile CD pressings and great mini-LP styled facsimile artwork. That is why this set is considerably cheaper than the Beatles Mono set whilst being very noticably lesser quality. That said, it is still very attractive and very good quality.(LJ THOMSON)

Audience - Friend's, Friend's, Friend
Of late, I've become a pretty big fan of the band Audience. In their original incarnation, they existed from about 1969 to 1972, releasing a mere four studio albums. Even though they fit into the so-called "early British progressive" scene along with countless lesser-known bands such as Cressida and Beggar's Opera, and the more well-known likes of Jethro Tull and label-mates Van Der Graaf Generator, Audience juxtaposed some serious folk overtones with a very British approach to storytelling and tongue-in-cheek humour. Their constitution was rather unique; there weren't too many bands whose instrumentation consisted primarily (if not always exclusively) of acoustic guitars and banjos, saxophones and woodwinds, electric bass, and drums/percussion. Such was Audience's aural palette, and it gave each member ample space to show just how intensely good they were as musicians, both as individuals and in combination. Despite their unconventional approach, they could rock with authority, and thus they established themselves as a band to be reckoned with. Friend's Friend's Friend was Audience's second album, and I certainly won't argue with anyone who wants to consider it to be their best. It showed perfectly how they could navigate the realm of shorter, more accessible songs such as "Belladonna Moonshine" and "It Brings A Tear" as well as the longer, instrumentally-focused pieces such as "Raid" and "Ebony Variations" and "Priestess." "Raid" in particular is especially interesting, as it was co-written by drummer Tony Connor and sax'n'reed-man Keith Gemmell. One would assume that Connor wrote the first half, a martial tale of Viking plunder sung with proud nasal exactitude by vocalist Howard Werth, and that Gemmell wrote the second half, which is a squalling, forlorn, bodies-strewn saxophone solo that should have made Coltrane proud. The other track written by Connor and Gemmell was "Priestess," a story derived from the realms of historical fantasy, and like "Raid" it had a whole section devoted to Gemmell's solo talents, this time on flute, again accompanied by Werth's plucky classical guitar. The only wholly instrumental track on Friend's Friend's Friend was the outstanding "Ebony Variations" which seems to be equally derived from Bach, British music-hall jazz, and early progressive rock. Gemmell's playing on the clarinet is wonderful, and the performance of bassist Trevor Williams is equally outstanding. The band deftly drive the piece through its paces, and it leaves no doubt as to their collective talents. Sadly enough, the music of Audience was probably a bit too esoteric for a wider, ummmmmm, audience (and I'm truly sorry but it's difficult to avoid that pun when writing about this band), and they were never able to break into the big time. Friend's Friend's Friend has stood up over the years as a fine piece of work, even if the band's heyday was relatively short. (reginod)

Caravan - Caravan & The New Symphonia (remastered + Bonus Tracks)
in 1974, the Canterbury prog-rock masters, Caravan, fused the two perfectly. In fact, this could possibly be the best fusion of rock and orchestra ever attempted. The orchestra is used in just the right way--not too overdone and not too overblown. Caravan uses the New Symphonia just like another member of the band--adding an overall effect, which is astonishing and breathtaking. From the power of "For Richard," to the sweetness of "The Love of Your Eyes," this record is sure to be a favorite for any Caravan fan who might be skeptical of this live classical fusion. For others interested in the paring of electricity and orchestra, this album is not one to miss. This new remastered version is a gem. To put it bluntly, it sounds amazing. The orchestra is so clear and perfect, it almost sounds as if this wasn't recorded in 1974. Plus, as a bonus, this disc features three tunes the band recorded that same night without the orchestra as a warm up before hitting the stage with the big band-I don't believe these songs were featured on the original release. While the fusion of orchestra with rock is a novelty these days, Caravan did it best in 1974 with this live release, along with the album prior to this, "Cunning Stunts." Play it loud and play it often! (C. Boros) 1. Introduction by Alan Black/Memory Lain, Hugh/Headloss - Caravan, 2. Dog, the Dog, He's at It Again [Live] 3. Hoedown 4. Introduction 5. Grails - Deep Politics
Deep Politics was conceived during the lengthiest gestation period between Grails albums, and reflects a deeper, more educated level of concentration. In their ongoing exploration of occult/fringe culture and the rich history of film music, they have cultivated a unique environment that inspires both an eternal sense of longing and an indelible sense of dread. Through tireless exploration and awe-inspiring execution, Grails have found their true calling as purveyors of a new kind of library music, to be discovered by future generations of crate diggers and curious forward-thinkers. If I didn't love this so much, I could just write a two-word negative review of "Derp Politics" and be noted down in RYM history for "Funniest user ever". However, I think I'm going to need more than two words to talk about this. Actually no, I suppose "film score" would be a good two words. In fact, I'll do one better with "cinematic". But no. Deep Politics is a tough cookie. It's Grails, so you basically know where you stand on the "like/dislike" end of the spectrum before you hear a note. Just like their other records, but, in typical Grails style, it's completely different. However, in this case, it's "different" because it's one of their only albums where it seems to be unified in one style. Neither a bad or good thing, it's a lot more coherent than their previous outings. For example, the drums and piano are the most prominent instruments here, with a lot of spaghetti western guitar lines. Trouble with all these contrasting instruments and overdubs is that it takes a long time to wrap your head around it. I was almost penniless, in typical student style, last month, so I streamed this album on YouTube before I bought it. I realised this morning, that a song I "didn't get" is the same song as the one I heard on my iPod this morning, thinking to myself "Sweet Jesus, this is beautiful". Title track, by the way. The whole album, like a lot of their albums, mixes world music in a delicious manner. Honestly, the only thing I can compare this to is the musical version of Kill Bill, if we forget the already-kickass soundtrack exists. It's a very style-over-substance fair, that mixes the best parts of Western and Eastern culture that touches upon the beauty of Japan, the tribal background of Africa, the stylishness of vast American cities amongst others in one tantalising package. I mean, it kind of has its lows. Some tracks are so good that you forget about others, which is quite sad. I remember the opening track to be quite rocking and groovy and I remember Daughters of Bilitis being really pretty... But in the end, overachievers like "All the Colors of the Dark", "Deep Politics" and "I Led Three Lives" just shine out way more than others. But come on. It's not often you come across an album for criticizing some of its songs for being "too good".(TheJoeyTaylor)

John Cale & Band - Live (2-cd Set - Live In Bochum & Essen 1983/1984)
Rockpalast captured Cale in Germany in '83 (solo) and '84 (quartet), and this two-disc set (DVD or CD) brings you both long-unavailable, yet much-talked-about, performances. The mood is menacing in the '84 show, which didn't begin 'til almost 3 a.m., and the intimate 1983 concert strips the songs to their raw emotions. In addition to revisiting VU's Waiting for the Man and putting his own dark twist on Heartbreak Hotel , he rivets the crowds with Fear Is a Man's Best Friend; Paris 1919; Amsterdam; Ghost Story; Guts; Close Watch; Evidence; Magazines , and more! you get the 'violent' Rockpalast show AND another concert from 1983, featuring the 'introverted' Cale on piano and guitar. Many of the songs are the same, but the interpretations are quite different. For the money, this is a very good buy as both concerts should be considered essential for any Cale fan. Makes a good introduction for newcomers as well as this live material is as good as it gets.

Mike Patton - The Solitude Of Prime Numbers
Mike Patton, moved by the Paolo Giordano novel The Solitude of Prime Numbers and having contributed music to the movie of the same name, has created a 16-track release that boasts some of the most contemplative and stirring music of his multi-faceted career, with Patton describing the release as a personal "sonic departure". Mike Patton's latest film soundtrack is a big departure from his previous releases. Restrained, sparse and somewhat sombre, Patton has achieved something contrary to his usual style of dense, layered and interchanging compositions. Here, true musical textures have been crafted, relying on silence and quiet as much as other instrumentation (interstingly, all of the instruments were played by the man himself this time). Simple and complex at the same time, this is an outstanding and refreshingly different side of Mike Patton to add the the multitude of his other musical 'personalities'. Just don't expect any sing-alongs... This is Mike Patton the musician, not Mike Patton the vocalist.

Sam Cooke - 8 Classic Albums (remastered 4-cd Set Of 8 Original Albums!)
Contains the albums 'Sam Cooke', 'Encore', 'Tribute to the Lady', 'Hit Kit', 'I Thank God', 'Cooke's Tour', 'Hits of the 50s', 'Swing Low', plus bonus singles. 118 tracks." On that basis, and given Cooke's status as one of the true greats of soul and gospel, I'd say this must warrant 5 stars, wouldn't you ? These eight albums and various singles, all recorded between 1957 and 1960 represent the transition of Cooke from gospel star to one of the greatest soul singers of all time. The songs range from jazz standards and broadway show-tunes to then current pop hits, and they are about the most mellow performances of Cooke's career. The material on the albums represented has been available off and on through various RCA budget and repackaging offerings over the years, though initially most of it was issued on the Keen label. The digital transfers are definitely from LP, and while in some cases they're a bit wanting, for the most part they're acceptable, especially considering the source and age of the recordings. If you're looking for the hits, go to the ABKCO packages. If you want the great gospel tracks, go to the Specialty packages. But if you want some great late night Cooke, this is the place to find it. The albums in the package are: Sam Cooke (1957), Encore (1958), Tribute to the Lady (1959), Hit Kit (1959), I Thank God (EP - 1960), Cooke's Tour (1960), Hit's of the '50's (1960), Swing Low (1960) and various singles released during the same period that were not included on these albums. Unfortunately there are no liner notes or album cover reproductions, and the remastering is only okay, so it's three instead of four or five stars. Maybe RCA or ABKCO will eventually find the time to do this package properly with remastering from the original tapes and thoughtful notes and cover reproductions, but in the meantime, this will have to suffice.

The Cure - Seventeen Seconds (180 Gram Lp Audiophile Vinyl Pressing)
Out of all the bands that emerged in the immediate aftermath of punk rock in the late '70s, few have proven as enduring and popular as The Cure. At the outset, The Cure played jagged, edgy pop songs before slowly evolving into a more textured outfit. As one of the bands that laid the seeds for Goth Rock, the group created towering layers of guitars and synthesizers, yet by the time Goth caught on in the mid-'80s, The Cure had already moved on from the genre. 'Seventeen Seconds' was recorded and mixed in seven days on a budget of between £2000 and £3000, which resulted in the band working 16 or 17 hours a day to complete the album. From short instrumental pieces to robotic pop, 'Seventeen Seconds' is where The Cure shed all the outside input and became their own band. · 180 grams audiophile vinyl · Including the hitsingle "A Forest" Tracklisting: A1 A Reflection A2 Play For Today A3 Secrets A4 In Your House A5 Three B1 The Final Sound B2 A Forest B3 M B4 At Night B5 Seventeen Seconds

Tom Waits - Bad As Me (180 Gram Vinyl Lp+full-size Lyric Book+cd)
this is a limited edition 180 gran vinyl lp of waits first new studio album in 7 years. It contains full-size 16-page book of lyrics & photos and a cd of the whole album. Throughout his career, Tom Waits has created milestone albums that serve both to refine the music that has come before, and to signal a new phase in his career: Rain Dogs and Mule Variations are both counted by fans as among these pivotal works. Now comes Bad As Me, his first studio album of all new music in seven years, which finds Tom Waits in possibly the finest voice of his career and at the height of his songwriting powers, working with a veteran team of gifted musicians and longtime co-writer/producer Kathleen Brennan. From the opening horn-fueled chug of "Chicago," to the closing barroom chorale of "New Year's Eve," Bad As Me displays the full career range of Waits' songwriting, from beautiful ballads like "Last Leaf," to the avant cinematic soundscape of "Hell Broke Luce," a battlefront dispatch. On tracks like "Talking at the Same Time," Waits shows off a supple falsetto, while on blues burners like "Raised Right Men" and the gospel tinged "Satisfied" he spits, stutters and howls. Like a good boxer, these songs are lean and mean, with strong hooks and tight running times. And there is a pervasive sense of players delighting in each other's musical company that brings a feeling of loose joy even to the album's saddest songs. Bad As Me is a Tom Waits album for the ages.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon (180 Gram Heavyweight Vinyl Lp)
2011 remaster by James Guthrie with artwork by Storm Thorgerson. Pink Floyd's most successful and singularly defining album is here to stay. The Dark Side of the Moon has sold over 40 million copies worldwide since its release in 1973, and it shows no signs of letting up. With lush, immaculate production and sweeping instrumentals, The Dark Side of the Moon is unrivaled in sonic brilliance. The complex textures found within have captivated audiophiles for over thirty years. With lyrics about seemingly mundane details set against dreamy, atmospheric backdrops, the songs on The Dark Side of the Moon achieve a truly emotional response. Performances are not virtuosic, but they are brilliant nonetheless and were likewise brilliantly recorded. Abbey Road Studios engineer Alan Parsons and Pink Floyd made use of some of the most advanced techniques available at the time to craft a sound that was innovative yet entirely classic, by any sense of the word. Swirling organs, mellow drums, and spacious guitars are signature sounds that have been inextricably linked with Pink Floyd's magnificent songwriting. The Dark Side of the Moon is a peerless entry in the annals of classic rock history. No record collection should be without this multi-platinum masterpiece. This 30th Anniversary Edition packaging features the newly re-mastered version of the album prepared by Pink Floyd producer/engineer James Guthrie, who went back to the original 16 track master tapes of Dark Side of the Moon to prepare the new editions at his Das Boot studios in South Lake Tahoe.
