If you remotely like 999 (or 1977-1978 punk bands for that matter), buy this double offering, it's great value. The band's first two albums are included in full on this 'two for the price of one' offering. Both albums have stood the test of time well and like The Buzzcocks ~ Another Music in a Different Kitchen, still sound fresh with their clean guitar riffs and distinctive vocal style. Both albums were originally released in 1978 and include the bands singles like Crazy, Emergency, Homocide and Feelin alright with the crew. But unlike a lot of albums from that era the other tracks on the album are far from "fill in's", tracks like Rael Rean, Brightest View and I'm Alive outshine their more famous cousins in many respects.

Blondie - Blondie (remastered W/ 5 Bonus Tracks)

Recorded in 1976, Blondie's self-titled debut was part of the New York City/CBGB's crowd's initial salvo of punk/new wave, radically different from anything in the American mainstream at the time. While other CBGB scenemakers strove for either artiness (Television) or primitivism (Ramones), Blondiewas always about pure pop, served with a healthy dose of irony. Its early-'60s rock & roll/girl-group roots were never so apparent as on this album--"In the Sun" sounds like a classic slice of sunny '60s West Coast pop, while "In the Flesh" reaches even further back for a '50s ballad feel. The sly lyrics, Debbie Harry's knowing delivery, and especially Jimmy Destri's gloriously cheesy organ riffs make it apparentthat revivalism was never Blondie's intention; the band simply used the past to hijack the punk present and lay claim to a new wave future. Over the next few years, countless groups would adopt the template laid down on the first couple ofBlondie albums, with varying degrees of success, but, as this recording makes plain, Blondie did it first and best.

1979's EAT TO THE BEAT was Blondie's fourth album, and the first to follow the enormous commercial breakthrough of 1978's PARALLEL LINES. Though its singles, the brilliant "Dreaming" and the disco-influenced "Atomic", were lesser hits thanPARALLEL LINES' "Heart of Glass" and "One Way or Another", EAT TO THE BEAT's success cemented Blondie's status as by far the most commercially viable of the first wave of New Yorkpunk bands. By this time, the band's always-tenuous connection to punk was barely noticeable; the artsy "Victor", the Springsteen-ish "Union City Blue", written for the soundtrack of Debbie Harry's first film, Steeltown, and the reggae-tinged "Die Young Stay Pretty" are early evidence of the sort of casual genre-hopping which defined the band's next album, AUTOAMERICAN. The ripping title track, "Accidents Never Happen" and the dreamy "Living in the Real World", however, are more typical Blondie fare.

Blondie - Plastic Letters ( Remastered W/ 4 Bonus Tracks)

Considered by many to be Blondie's best, their second albumcatches the group poised on the brink of global superstardom. PLASTIC LETTERS' first single, a gender-switched cover ofthe '60s pop hit "Denise" by Randy and the Rainbows, was a massive British hit which went far towards dispelling the band's second-tier status on the New York punk scene. The rest of the disc improves immensely on their self-titled debut, with sharper songwriting and better production. Jimmy Destri's Farfisa organ is still the band's main musical focal point, but his playing has evolved, along with the melodies, beyond the simple '60s pastiches of the debut. "Youth Nabbedas Sniper" and "Contact in Red Square" continue the band's fascination with trash culture, but the glorious "I'm AlwaysTouched by Your Presence Dear", written by departed bassistGary Valentine, is a genuinely heartfelt, if ironic, love song.

Boomtown Rats - Live At The Hammersmith Odeon 1978 (dvd)

Touring on the back of Tonic for the Troops, the Boomtown Rats Hammersmith Odeon headliner marked just how far the band had come in a year -- 12 months previous, they were still rattling round the pubs and clubs. The concert reflected their new-found fame -- watching this beautifully shot document, the band both look and act like stars, in front of an audience who knows every word of every song, and responds with increasing zeal every time a new one starts up. With a set drawn (of course) wholly from their first two albums, the Rats retain much of their original punk spit and polish -- the slower numbers are fast, the fast ones are faster. But even as "Rat Trap" speeds past, the sheer magnetism of the entire band (and not just frontman Bob Geldof) is inescapable, and the camera team must be commended for ensuring everybody gets their moment in the lens. In fact, the only serious failing is that the entire concert wasn't filmed -- three songs (including a truly incendiary "Neon Heart") are included as audio recordings only. Other highlights -- the stop-start camera work that introduces "Like Clockwork"; the glee with which Geldof conducts the crowd through an a cappella intro to "She's So Modern"; some surprisingly effective non-concert footage scattered around the performance; and, finally, the bonus inclusion of a couple of solo Geldof videos, all-but-unseen in the U.S., and screaming at the injustice of that. Ultimately, however, it's the concert footage that matters and, though the Rats were yet to hit their live peak when this was filmed (another year, and they were truly unbeatable), still Live at Hammersmith Odeon 1978 ranks among the most enjoyable packages in the band's entire catalog.

Buzzcocks - The Complete French Sessions (2-cd Set)

Originally released in 1996, French was recorded during a Buzzcocks gig in Paris in the spring of 1995, and it captured the band in typically superb form, roaring through a 20-song set of new tunes and old favorites with equal measures of skill and passion; the sweaty fire of the show certainly communicated on tape, and it was a tremendous testament of the band's continued strengths. However, as is so often the case with live albums, there was more where that came from, and the 1999 release Paris: Encore du Pain featured ten more songs from the same concert (including several audience favorites such as "I Don't Know What to Do With My Life," "Orgasm Addict" and "Ever Fallen in Love?"). French et Encore du Pain: The Complete 1995 Paris Live is a double-disc set that finally, logically, makes the two releases available in one package, with French containing the show's main set and the second CD featuring the ten tunes from their three encores, and the band sounds just as fired up on the final cut, "Fast Cars," as they do on the show opener "I Don't Mind." Nearly three decades on, the Buzzcocks continue as a band for two reasons - they obviously love to play, and they happen to be very good at it, and French et Encore du Pain: The Complete 1995 Paris Live is a treat for fans that should also surprise those wondering if these long-in-the-tooth punks still have anything to offer. Crushed Butler - Uncrushed (first Punks From The British Underground 69-71)

featuring Alan Butler and Jesse Hector, on bass and guitar respectively, with 17-year old drummer, actor and teen mag pin-up Darryl Read! Playing prestigious gigs with the likes of Atomic Rooster, Third World War, Mott The Hoople, Osibisa and Kevin Ayers; Crushed Butler routinely blew the headlining act off the stage with their ferocious brand of hooligan rock and were described by one contemporary reviewer as being "three ugly, heavy musicians, making music to match." Recording their first demo session at Regent Sound Studios in October 1969, the live and rowdy 'It's My Life' is the only song that survives. By the time of their second session in the winter of 1970, at EMI's Manchester Square studios, Alan Butler had become the band's roadie and Stan Aldous from Aardvark came in on bass, but despite the efforts of the young in-house producer Roger Ferris, the label showed little interest in such proto-punk classics as 'Factory Grime' and 'Love Is All Around Me'. 'My Son Is Alive' was recorded at a third session, at Decca's West Hampstead Studios in spring 1970 where bass duties were now being handled by Barry Wyles, who'd previously played with a pre-Queen Smile. They also recorded for DJM and were banned from the newly opened De Lane Lea Studios in Wembley after Darryl's drumsticks became embedded in the studio's ceiling and Jesse was caught by members of Queen playing guitar while rolling around on top a grand piano. Around this time they also recorded the demo of 'High School Dropout' which caught the ear of Dick Leahy at Bell Records and some say gave him the idea for the future glam direction of the label. Still failing to get a record deal the band rapidly lost heart. For a short while they changed their name to Tiger and were managed by Neil Christian of The Crusaders but folded once Darryl decided to leave for America to work with former members of The Doors. Eventually a limited edition 10" Vinyl release did make it to the fans, just 500, gone in an instant in 1991 pressed up by Dig The Fuzz. Presented in a superb gatefold sleeve with original cartoon drawings, full liners and photos it was a wholly deserved release for these pioneers. It earned excellent reviews during its short shelf life and has become hailed as the first British Punk album. Now for the first time we are presenting this release on CD with the addition of an extra version of 'High School Dropout'. Echo & The Bunnymen - Crocodiles ( 25th Ann. Remastered & Expanded Edition)

Debut albums don`t get much better. If you enjoy your music dark and melodic, this is for you. From the opening track, Going Up, this album never fails to impress, with 8 out of the 10 tracks being superb, with the other 2 only making brilliant status. Crocodiles and Rescue are obvious favourites, while Stars are Stars, Monkeys, Villiers Terrace, Pictures On My Wall and All That Jazz, are Bunnymen classics. The only downside to this album is that it has to end. Buy it and be better for it.

OCEAN RAIN was modestly described as "the greatest album ever made" during it's promotional campaign. While it doesn't quite live up to this rash claim, it remains Echo and the Bunnymen's most ambitious and cohesive '80s release--a stepping stone that really should have led the band to world-wide fame. This is where the band left any traces of post-punk shambling behind and reached for the stars. The majestic mood of the album is heightened by the extravagant string arrangements that underpin Ian McCulloch's plaintive croon. On "The Killing Moon," one of the band's finest moments, the orchestra is deployed to spectacular effect. McCulloch gives the performance of his life, while the group's often overlooked guitarist Will Sergeant plays with imaginative dexterity. Things turn spookily psychedelic during "Thorn of Crowns," with its memorable refrain "c-c-c-cucumber, c-c-c-cabbage, c-c-c-cauliflower." It's hard to tell whether McCulloch is exorcising some inner demon or just trying to remember his shopping list. Somehow, in the context of the sparkling OCEAN RAIN, it doesn't really matter. 4 stars out of 5 (mojo)

Echo & The Bunnymen - Ocean Rain (vinyl Lp- 2011 Pressing)

Vinyl LP repressing of this 1984 album from the Liverpudlian quartet. Following the more Rock-oriented material on their first albums, the songs on Ocean Rain were a departure. The aim was to make something conceptual with lush orchestration, but with a twist. The band employed a 35-piece orchestra for Ocean Rain. Guitarist Will Sergeant would later describe the finished recording as 'windswept; dark and stormy.' The Scott Walker / Love inspired string arrangements, unusual instrumentation, inventive recording techniques and McCulloch's abstract and bewildering mysticism all added to the unique and timeless quality of the album.

47 tracks Costello picks and chooses among his 1977-1986 work for a selection of cuts that, rather than tell a story, make implications and set moods. It's hardly vague, though, not with the likes of "Lipstick Vogue," "Watching the Detectives," and "Clubland" on board. The artist's liner notes are a must-read for die-hard fans. -- (Rickey Wright) The oddity of GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS is that the CD and the now-deleted cassette and vinyl versions of this collection are markedly different in song selection and sequencing. Selectedby Elvis Costello himself as a farewell to Columbia Records, this two-disc set covers the years from MY AIM IS TRUE through BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE in non-chronological order. Going strictly by Costello's personal taste rather than chart placement, the collection ignores big hits like "Everyday I Write the Book" and "The Only Flame in Town". Indeed, "Pills and Soap" and "Shipbuilding" are the only tracks from PUNCH THE CLOCK, and 1984's GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD--"our worst album",as Costello famously called it on the Rykodisc reissue--is ignored completely. The selection, representing all of Costello's other albums and styles well, is excellent, and the songs are simply magnificent. There are no rarities, but none are needed.

The Exploited's fourth record finds the band with an entirely new lineup (only leader Wattie Buchan remains), but never fear, the new boys prove that they are entirely capable of thrashing and, what's more, they are eager to thrash. Great, thunderous rockers like "Kidology" and "Another Day to Go Nowhere" fulfill the obligatory youth-angst requirement while "Let's Start a War (Said Maggie One Day)" and "Rival Leaders" (among many others) represent the epicenter of the group's familiar antiwar/anti-Thatcher sentiment. Nothing new in the grand scheme of punk rock in general (or the Exploited in particular), Let's Start a War...Said Maggie One Day is what it is -- punk rock comfort food.

Fall - Totally Wired - The Rough Trade Anthology (2-cd Set)

Arguably the essential period of the Fall was the tenure the legendary Manchester group spent signed to Rough Trade, during which time they produced their most arresting and original work in what is undoubtedly one of the greatest recorded anthologies in the history of British post-punk rock. Essential Records had the genius to compile this two-disc set surveying the seminal 1980-1983 period; it serves as an excellent starting point for newcomers to the group and an essential upgrade for the owners of the group's thrashed LPs and singles. In early 2008 Gary Numan celebrates his 30th year in music and turns 50. To celebrate this, the pioneering electronic album Replicas will be re-issued as Gary Numan & Tubeway Army - Replicas Redux on February 25, 2008. The album includes the breakthrough single 'Are 'Friends' Electric?', which gave Numan his first simultaneous Number 1 single and album when Replicas joined it at the top of the charts a few weeks later. Gary Numan - Tubeway Army - Premier Hits

In the U.S., Gary Numan is remembered as a one-hit-wonder, while back home in his native England, he continued to crank out hit after hit and became a superstar in the process. His icy space-age persona and sound may be forever associated with early-80's British new wave (Flock of Seagulls, early Duran Duran, etc.), but he was the originator, and today seems pretty darned original. Numan was a scholar of the David Bowie Ziggy Stardust-era, and used Bowie's space alien approach as a starting point. While retaining his futuristic lyrics, Gary stripped Ziggy's sound free of the distorted guitar riffing and posturing, and replaced it with clinical synthesizers and a standoffish stage persona. His music also gives off a paranoid vibe at times, as evidenced on the hits "I Die: You Die" and "Are 'Friends' Electric?" But Numan's songs can also sedate you ("Down in the Park"), while other times sneak up on you (the unexpected punk rocker "Bombers"). And of course there's his sole U.S. hit, "Cars," which sounds like a not so distant ancestor to fellow futuristic weirdos Devo.

Howard Devoto - Jerky Versions Of The Dream (remastered W/ 6 Bonus Tracks)

Erstwhile Buzzcock and former front man of post-punk outfits Magazine and Luxuria, Howard Devoto has always been somewhat difficult to peg musically. After disbanding Magazine in the early '80s, Devoto went on to pursue a short-lived solo career, resulting in his lone 1983 effort, JERKY VERSIONS OFTHE DREAM. More pop-based than any of his previous efforts,the songs all feature Devoto's distinctive croon--a discomfiting mix of seduction and caustic menace. Like his materialwith Magazine, Devoto's lyrics are peppered with poetic allusions to politics, both personal and social. The slow building heat of "Cold Imagination" comes across like a post-punkquiet storm. Trapped in the deep freeze of his own mind, his anguished voice intones, "Get me out of my cold imagination". Other tracks, like the jaunty "Waiting for a Train", allude humorously to the everyday occurrence of a train delay resulting in an existential crisis. Melding frenetic industrial funk with sardonic lounge piano, the music appropriately matches Devoto's eccentric lyrical musings--offering obtuse but highly original philosophical and social commentary.

Iggy Pop - Lust For Life

The relentless, driving drums and thunderous bass of the opening title track are the magic components that make it the best song Iggy Pop ever recorded without the Stooges. They're also why this is Iggy's best solo album--which also includes the ominously upbeat "The Passenger", with its hilariously ennui-filled, sing-along chorus ("La la la la la la la la la..."). As with Pop's first solo album, The Idiot, David Bowie has his hands all over the proceedings (if not somewhere else as well) as the producer, songwriter, and general overseer of Iggy the popstar. The record reached 28 in the U.K. charts. Of course, as the jagged, dark guitars on "Sixteen" and "Neighborhood Threat" make clear, Iggy's version of pop music is anything but conventional, and anything but bland. "Some Weird Sin" ("That's what I want...") could have been Iggy's theme song in 1977, heavy with innuendo and a dangerous joie de vivre.
