Aardvark - Aardvark (remastered Esoteric Edition Of 1970 Album) Aardvark - Aardvark (remastered Esoteric Edition Of 1970 Album) NEW REMASTERED EDITION D FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES OF THE 1970 ALBUM BY PROGRESSIVE ROCK GROUP AARDVARK, ORIGINALLY RELEASED ON THE DERAM NOVA LABEL. *          BOOKLET WITH FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK & ESSAY. The band were an imaginative quartet comprising DAVID SKILLIN on Vocals, STEVE MILLINER on keyboards, STAN ALDOUS on Bass and FRANK CLARK on drums who came together in 1969. Driven by Steve Milliner's keyboard playing ability, Aardvark's only album was released in 1970 on Decca's short lived progressive imprint DERAM NOVA. One of the best albums released on NOVA, "Aardvark" features such outstanding pieces as the evocative `ONCE UPON A HILL', `MANY THINGS TO DO' and the powerful album closing track; `PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT'. A Truly Amazing LP from start to finish. it starts off with the song "Copper Sunset" a Hammond heavy groovy riff based tune, this type of stuff carries on through the cd until track 6 "The Outing - Yes", which starts off as an annoying little pop ditty (a'la Giles & fripp)before turning into a psychotic electro Hammond weirdo freak-out improv. The next song "Once Upon A Hill" is a nice quiet refrain obviously influenced by traditional English folk songs (Scarborough Fair, greensleeves). The Last track on the cd is "Put That In Your Pipe & Smoke It" which finishes this U.K. Prog Gem off nicely with another crazy freak-out improvisation. So if you like the sound of it and have a spare £70 to £100 go out and buy it on vinyl if not the cd is certainly a more viable option....(R. goldie)

Al Anderson - Al Anderson Al Anderson - Al Anderson The happy-go-lucky almost Mardi Gras feel of "We'll Make Love," the second track on this 1972 solo disc from the man behind the North East's legendary Wildweeds and their phenomenal Boston-area hit "No Good to Cry" (unfortunately, not on this disc, but an acoustic version might be a perfect addition to a future re-release), carries that distinctive almost gravel voice of Al Andersen. Though he would later join N.R.B.Q., this earthy folk/blues/country platter was recorded between June and September of 1972 and is a wonderful snapshot of an underrated artist at that point in time. "Ain't No Woman Finer" has Jeff Potter's wailing harp that plays off of Andersen's vocal sustain and snappy guitar work. The colorful and uniquely distorted cover photo of Andersen is almost psychedelic country, but there's none of that here. His vocal on "You're Just Laughing Inside" is reminiscent of early Elton John, say the "Amoreena" or "Burn Down the Mission" period. Hank Williams' "Honky Tonkin'" is the shortest track, but one of the liveliest. "Don't Hold the Line" explodes toward the end, and it is one of the few tunes on here that gets really raucous. "I Just Want to Have You Back Again" is a simple two-and-a-half-minute tune - if Jim Croce were more laid-back, he'd probably have sounded like this, melodically it reminds one almost of early Paul McCartney solo - maybe the first McCartney meets Ringo on his Sentimental Journey. The closing title, "I Haven't Got the Strength to Carry On" with Tom Staley's drums and Al Lepak's bass, form a nice framework for Andersen's blues-driven guitar. Song Title   1. Be My Woman Tonight   2. We'll Make Love   3. Ain't No Woman Finer Lookin'   4. You're Just Laughin' Inside   5. I Don't Believe I'll Stay Here Anymore   6. Honky Tonkin'   7. Goin' On Back To Indiana   8. Don't Hold The Line   9. I Just Want To Have You Back Again   10. I Haven't Got The Strength To Carry On   11. C'mon If You're Comin' - (bonus track)

Allman Brothers Band - Eat A Peach Allman Brothers Band - Eat A Peach Released in February 1972, less than four months after Duane Allman's death, EAT A PEACH gathers together the final tracks laid down by the original Allman Brothers Band, the only studio documentation of the short-lived five-man, one-guitar ABB lineup and the remaining performances from the concerts which had yielded the epochal AT FILLMORE EAST album. Far from being a stereotypical posthumous odds and ends collection, however, EAT A PEACH is a treasure trove containing much of the Brothers' best work, and stands right beside FILLMORE at the very apex of their stupendous body of recordings. Opening with the post-Duane tracks, EAT A PEACH demonstrates from its very first notes that there was - and is - far more to the ABB than one amazing guitarist. Brother Gregg's "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," though written before Duane's crash, is an effective and all-too-poignant rumination on uprushing mortality with excellent playing from the whole quintet. Dickey Betts, tossed into the unenviable position of sole guitar player in rock's most celebrated two-guitar band, more than holds his own here, contributing top-notch picking on every track - most notably his own thunderstorm instrumental, "Les Brers in A Minor," which starts out as a grinding tribute to amplification before morphing into a Santana-esque Latin funk workout liberally spiced with impressive displays of chops all around. "Melissa," a beautiful old ballad co-written by Gregg which the Brothers had first recorded with their previous group the Hourglass, is by contrast epitomally delicate and genuinely moving; Dickey's ethereal lead is a dream. Next up: thirty-three minutes of "Mountain Jam," longest of the ABB's many long onstage workouts, the Duane-drenched final third of which is at least the equal of anything on FILLMORE and makes me wonder why that album wasn't simply released as a triple, with this LP-length track included, in the first place. Also recorded during the Fillmore East engagement, "One Way Out" and "Trouble No More," which the Brothers had first tackled on their 1969 debut album, are solid blues jams in the classic Allmans vein. Finally, there are the last three studio tunes featuring Duane, which with fitting irony point to yet more new directions this band might well have explored had it only had the opportunity. "Stand Back," a bouncing number from Gregg, would've been equally at home on IDLEWILD SOUTH; but Dickey's sublime country ballad "Blue Sky," with its brilliant solos from both guitarists, and Duane's only ABB composition, the brief dobro/guitar duet "Little Martha," mine and master new territory and suggest that a more varied range of material, from an expanded group of songwriters, would have kept this band firmly at the front of the pack through all those gigs that might have been. More than thirty years later, the original ABB's handful of recordings remain one of the great listening experiences to be had anywhere. EAT A PEACH and AT FILLMORE EAST are the very best of the great, which really leaves nothing to say.

Make sure you hear it." MOJO, UK, April 1999 "From rage to sage, it's not too late to discover one of our best-kept secrets." White has switched from edgy folk label Cooking Vinyl to the more austere Thirsty Ear for this self-titled departure from his usual sparse and driving protest songs and Irish ballads. These are thoughtful pop constructs that leave the listener on a plateau of abandon one minute and in a melancholic valley the next. The album is outstanding in its evocation of emotional ambiguity, both lyrically and within its brilliant harmonic changes. Themes of yearning - for travel, home, companionship, and freedom - and moving on filter through in vignettes, both specific and non-specific. The tracks are enriched by a roster of guests, such as Radoslav Lorkovic on accordion, Ursula Burns on harp, and Stephen Fearing on mandola. It includes the gospel-tinged wails of Josie Docherty on "Jesus in a Cadillac," a duet with the Wild Colonials' Angela McCluskey on the sublime "Please," and the elevating single "Coz I'm Free," which was inspired by the tattoo on the arm of Olympic 400-meter champion Cathy Freeman.

Armaggedon (germany) - Armaggedon (remastered Esoteric Edition Of 1970 Album) Armaggedon (germany) - Armaggedon (remastered Esoteric Edition Of 1970 Album) At one time this was an almost impossible album to obtain on physical medium (until a recent Esoteric re-issue) and certainly worth tracking down. Asbjornsen cites a Hendrix influence in his book on German Prog, "Cosmic Dream at Play" and whilst there is a nod to the great man, to my ears it is Peter Green that is written all over this superb blues/rock/prog outing, not only in Green's beautiful and fluid style of guitar work but also in the similar vocal style and tone. The similarity to classic period Spooky Tooth is born out by a wonderful rendition of "Better By You, Better Than Me". Like many Italian one-album bands of the time, this also leaves the listener wondering what might have been, had they made more albums. Musical audiences are a fickle lot. Countless awful bands achieve great longevity whilst many excellent and often far more able groups fall on stony ground and are consigned to the cess-pit of obscurity. Fabulous heavy Prog, highly recommended.(theworldof) Kuckuck was responsible for releasing many great albums in Germany in the early 1970s, including this sole album by the legendary Armaggedon. Not to be confused with other bands of the same name, the quartet comprised Frank Diez (lead guitar, vocals), Manfred Galatik (keyboards, bass guitar, vocals), Michael Nurnberg (bass& rhythm guitars) and Jurgen Lorenzen (drums, percussion). The album was one of the earliest issued on the Kuckuck imprint and was a fine hard progressive rock alb um with Frank Diez's guitar work inspired by the likes of Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix.

Atlanta Rhythm Section - Third Annual Pipe Dream/ A Rock And Roll Alternative Atlanta Rhythm Section - Third Annual Pipe Dream/ A Rock And Roll Alternative remastered two-fer from the Southern Rock band containing a pair of albums on one CD: Third Annual Pipe Dream (1974) and A Rock & Roll Alternative (1976). The Atlanta Rhythm Section was one of the best bands on the American rock circuit throughout the 70's. They called it a day in the early 80's but reformed in the later years of that decade with a new release which was followed by intermittent recordings thereafter. There is still an ARS on the road today but only one original member remains. There are a bewildering amount of compilations now available so I hope to make your choice easier by simply advising you to BUY THIS CD! BGO and GOTT Records are 2 labels that have now merged who specialise in making music (that may have slipped out of mainstream consciousness) available to fans in attractive newly mastered releases that are frequently great value 2 albums on one CD. You have one of the best bargains in their catalog on this release. I have already reviewed "A Rock 'n' Roll Alternative" as a single disc on these Amazon pages so will shorten my comments to describe it as one of the top 5 southern rock albums that's an absolute essential purchase for anyone interested in the genre. Briefly the best southern rock draws from different musical styles - boogie, blues and country with jazz touches and more than a passing nod to British blues rock. Paul Rodgers seems to have been a huge influence on many of the genre's top vocalists. ARS weren't as bluesy or boozy as Skynyrd or the Allmans but showed far greater musicality and subtle song-writing and arrangements that have stood the test of time. "Alternative" features "So Into You", "Georgia Rhythm", "Neon Nights" and "Hitch Hikers Hero" all classic songs with great vocals and superb harmonies. This album was released in 1976 and went gold Stateside within a year. "Third Annual Pipedream" dates from '74 and was the Georgia group's breakthrough album. While not as accomplished as it's coupling here it was still a big improvement on it 2 predecessors. The album opens with "Doraville" - the track that turned me onto southern rock. It's an infectious slice of country rock that builds a simple chord sequence by adding extra layers of harmony and I've been unable to avoid singing along every time I heard it since (over 35 years !) "Angel" is another classic. This song has a number of time changes and is an excellent and well-thought out arrangement. Bass players may note that most ARS albums featured a bass solo at a time when only the jazz-rock groups would consider doing such a thing. The CD has a couple of almost country acoustic singalongs ("Get your Head out of my Heart" - great title!, and "Jesus Hearted People") that will again have you joining in for the choruses. The remainder of the tracks are more routine though still worthwhile with a rather ordinary instrumental being a bit of an anti-climax. So you have almost 70 minutes of genre-defining music at a great price. The remastering gives a touch more clarity and more focussed bass than the original recordings. I couldn't recommend this release more highly. Can I also suggest you go for it's sister release where two more mid-70's albums "Dog Days" and "Red Tape" are paired with equally wonderful music.( Fergal Woods)

Atlas Sound - Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Atlas Sound - Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Limited edition UK two CD pressing of the 2008 debut album from the solo moniker of 25 year old Deerhunter frontman / provocateur Bradford Cox features a bonus disc containing six non-album tracks. Bradford is everything with Atlas Sound and what you hear is a complex, expansive bedroom recording. Totally absorbed and working at a prolific rate, he channels a stream of consciousness, leaving the scorched beauty of his vocals raw and untreated. Citing the 'ideas that I can't make work with a five piece rock band', as the basis of his solo work and unrestricted, he makes an unparalleled meld of garage rock and ambient electronics. Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel is a serious body of work that manages to combine seemingly incongruous sound elements to make a wonderfully cohesive Pop narrative. It is also one of the year's first truly great albums.
