Ignition finds the Music Machine, single-black-gloved and snarling, back in the garage, inhaling too much exhaust and exhaling these 19 tracks , exhumed with intensity intact. This long-awaited third Music Machine album features rare tracks-12 previously unheard-ranging from their pre-"Talk Talk" demos from 1965 as the Ragamuffins to their final 1969 experimental recordings. Includes track annotations by group leader Sean Bonniwell and Music Machine expert Mike Stax.
As this has a mixture of rare singles and unreleased tracks from 1965-1969, it's primarily for converted Music Machine fans, not for those who want just one album by the group or a place to start investigation. That said, it's a pretty interesting assortment of odds and ends, a few of which are among the band's best efforts. Foremost among them is the explosive (and quite innovative for its time) 1966 number "Point of No Return" with its unusual mixture of folk-rock and pre-acid guitar work, as well as a magnificent anguished, subtly anti-war vocal by singer and songwriter Sean Bonniwell. The moody, building-from-a-smolder-to-a-roar "Dark White," a 1969 outtake, was already heard on the out-of-print Rhino best-of LP. It's also one of Bonniwell's better creations, as well as one of the best lyrical meditations upon the ambiguous tension of sexual desire that you're likely to hear. "Advise and Consent" is a decent obscure flop single, though not one of the group's greatest. As for the previously unveiled outings, the 1965 demos by the Ragamuffins (the trio of future Music Machine members Bonniwell, drummer Ron Edgar, and bassist Keith Olsen) are especially interesting, catching them in their tentative transition from folk-pop to garage psychedelia. "Citizen Fear," one of the latest tracks (from 1969), has the careering sonics and intriguing sociometaphysical (if that's a word) words typical of Bonniwell's better songs. Much of the rest, though, is simply not up to the caliber of the band's best stuff. Less than 200 copies of this classic 1968 garage/psychedelic LP were pressed back in 1968. The album is full of both garage ballads and fuzzed-out rockers created by The Bachs, a 5-piece band from Chicago. The reissue is full of great photos of the band.
Chicago jangle guitar downer garage psych with gorgeous aching vocals. Masterful guitar work covering the spectrum from Beau Brummels chiming to anarchic Litter runs. Haunting poetic originals full of lost love and broken dreams - even moving into stream of consciousness territory on 'Minister to a Mind Diseased' and 'Tables of Grass Fields'. The closer, 'I'm a Little Boy', is an otherworldly dark feedback monster. Literally every track is a winner! Recorded in a butcher's shop by this high school group late 1967 and released January 1968. This group had a maturity and presence way beyond their years. For me, it comes down to this and the Litter's "Distortions" for best US garage LP.(ron moore)

The Rationals' Fan Club Album is legendary in collector circles as one of the rarest 60s garage artefacts known to man - only two test pressing copies are confirmed to exist. Consisting of unreleased outtakes from the bands earliest sessions in 1965 and 1966, the long-player was intended as a farewell 'thank you' to the group's loyal fan base by the band's producer and mentor Jeep Holland, when he parted with the Rationals in late 1968.
Save for one cut, this Big Beat vinyl reissue reprises the album's original tracklist and running order, and the fully illustrated sleeve comes with detailed liner notes.

Ace Records releases the third volume exploiting the fascinatingly quirky Downey Records catalogue.
* While the much-lauded first compilation was an instrumental collection, "Intoxica!" (CDCHD 1114), and the second was a rock`n'roll collection that spanned the pre-Beatle era ("It Came From The Suburbs" CDCHD 1133), this collection brings us gems from Southern California's suburban garage-land.
* All great garage-punkers and psychedelic whimsical delights of a jangly mixed-up nature! This is essentially a re-issue of a long-deleted and much-missed comp called "Scarey Business" (CDWIKD 205), which was released and then withdrawn in 2001. That collection had 13 Downey gems pulled from the tape vaults by Ace's Alec Palao, mixed with tracks from two other labels. This new compilation re-introduces all those Downey cuts plus another nine from the same source, including many unreleased tracks.

Returning to the regional themes espoused in earlier volumes, this power-packed collection focuses on one of the grungiest and most prolific garage rock scenes in the San Francisco Bay Area.
* Directly across the bay from San Francisco raged a teen scene so vibrant that the `adult' rock shenanigans of the early hippie clique had little impact, at least for a couple of years. The tough, blue collar environs of the East Bay demanded entertainment, not enlightenment, and sought it in the garage soul of the Spyders and US Male, the bright, British sounds of the Baytovens, Shillings and Peter Wheat & The Breadmen, or the droll Stonesy punk of the Harbinger Complex, Just VI and Soul Vendors.
