Jad Fair And Daniel Johnston - Somewhat Humorous Jad Fair And Daniel Johnston - Somewhat Humorous Daniel Johnston and Jad Fair, along with unknown newcomer Chris Bultman, have made the noisest (mostly) accoustic album in recent memory. This is a very, very good thing. Not exactly picking up where the savant genious of their "It's Spooky" left off, "Somewhat Humorous" explores a realm of music left untouched by even the most extreme fringe of independent artists. From their straightforward-but-not-straightforward retooling of "Ruby Tuesday" to the beautiful background clatter of "Pancakes Flop" and the cute-punk sneer of "She Starts Fire", there's a reward to be found at every turn. Reportedly written and recorded during a stay in Daniel's parents garage in the middle of the country, the music found on this CD sounds as if chaos, heartbreak, and winsomeness are added to the local water supply. Buy this before it goes down in the indie-rock history books. Those not familiar with Daniel Johnston's work should know that his approach to pop songwriting is similar to Fair's, with the exception that he suffers from serious bouts with manic depression and severe delusional behavior. That said, this pairing of these two musical savants is a successful foray into pop music as therapy. Neither one is blessed with a great voice (or technically, a good voice), the songs tend to be about simple pleasure, and the instrumentation is sparse. Despite both of them having flashes of happiness, this is by and large not a happy record; it's more of a soul-baring exercise.

Laurie Anderson - Bright Red Laurie Anderson - Bright Red BRIGHT RED (1994) is the outgrowth of STORIES FROM THE NEW BIBLE, a series of tales developed by Laurie Anderson. These STORIES were performed at live concerts ("readings") in the early '90s and were subsequently published in book form before Anderson had developed the studio "song" versions heard on BRIGHT RED. For Anderson, "song" often suggests an exploration of language rather than any traditional sense of "singing." She addresses an array of topics, covering everything from war to pop culture (in Anderson's view, the two are not really that far apart). Anderson is a respected name on New York's avant-garde scene, and she performs here with other key figures-Arto Lindsay, Adrian Belew, Marc Ribot, and Lou Reed (who provides his usual deadpan vocals on "In Our Sleep"). Perhaps most importantly, Brian Eno, the king of minimalism and sound experimentation, lends his talents to BRIGHT RED. His touch is evident. Anderson's voice hovers quietly over sparse, largely ambient musical sculptures, her delivery varying between sung and spoken, both with and without electronic manipulation. This album is a fine place to start exploring the art of Laurie Anderson. Pierre Henry, Pierre Schaeffer & More - Panorama De Musique Concrete Pierre Henry, Pierre Schaeffer & More - Panorama De Musique Concrete Musique Concr?te is often confused with electronic music, which originated in Germany and which is concerned with the electronic manufacture of sounds built up from basic tones. Musique Concr?te makes use of real everyday sounds which are modified by tape manipulation and electronic treatment. From the late forties, the genres two leading exponents have been the French composers Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry. If their compositions seem quaint to today's ears, in 1948, their bizarre, brittle, often beautiful, soundscapes were revolutionary. Schaeffer and Henry began their revolt by recording sounds from the natural world onto phonograph discs, altering them through the primitive means available, and creating an alarming music that they dubbed musique concr?te Schaeffer and Henry created audio portraits for the end of the machine age and the beginning of the electronic age that burst with mechanical noises, orchestral hits, trains, and text-sound babble. Doors open and close on indecipherable conversations; engines start, stop and transform into screams and moans; disembodied pianists jam with mouth noise rhythm sections. Now, almost 60 years later, the scratches on the records they used give this vanguard work a charming, antique quality. Their methods may seem archaic by contemporary standards, but the resulting music is powerfully evocative by any standards. Apostles include Bill Nelson ('enviromental guitar'), Brian Eno and Holger Czukay. Out-of-print for decades, A PANORAMA OF MUSIQUE CONCRETE is the movement's essential historic document. It comprises all of the classics of the genre, including The Veil of Orpheus, a cantata from Henry's 1953 'opera' Orpheus, Schaeffer's first musique concrete work 'Etude aux Chemins de Fer' (Railroad Study), an assemblage of sounds of train wheels, engines, and whistles, recorded at Batignolle Station and his Study for Whirlygigs, assembled with the aid of a child's whirlygig or spinning top. The original fifty minute edition of the Panorama is augmented by the first masterpiece of musique concr?te, Symphonie Pour Un Homme Seul (Symphony for a Man Alone)

The Puke Eaters - Hello Valhalla (vinyl Lp) The Puke Eaters - Hello Valhalla (vinyl Lp) Recorded (at least in part) in July 2005 and released in 2009.With a name like that, this trio have got to be either Finnish or on Chocolate Monk. In fact they're both, with a previous release on Dylan Nyoukis's imprint and a line-up featuring Jan Anderz?n of Kemialliset Yst?v?t and Reijo Pami of Avarus alongside drummer Chris Corsano. Their first LP is a classic of free-thinking small instrument DIY, with creepy-crawling moves that rival The Fugs and The Godz. Corsano doesn't spend much time on the kit and it's hard to put your finger on the precise nature of his contribution. But the overall level of confusion doesn't encourage focusing on any particular participant, instead highlighting the multiple permutations of time and space accessible to masters of a particularly crude form of improvisatory brain muscle. of all the odd wonders and incestuous secrets to emerge from finland in the last 20 years, the puke eaters could be thee greatest. "hello walhalla" is the first long playing record by this anti-prolific group. the applied methods range from accidental to free and from psycho-motorik to ritual. for any points of reference think of the swamp into which fille qui mousse, cromagnon and 'jesus christ' era smell & quim were dumped. after years of tireless experimentation in the cynical utopian ruinscape of their collective butterfly mind, the puke eaters have loosened their belts and finally unleashed their deadliest recordings for thee future caveman. endless volcano-brain spewing on the ur-limits of limitless psycho-dynamic sound clash, totally high on scandinavian pussy juice.
