Bauhaus - In The Flat Field (ltd 2cd Omnibus Edition) Bauhaus - In The Flat Field (ltd 2cd Omnibus Edition) Between the release of Bauhaus' debut single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead," in 1979 on the Small Wonder label, and their debut album, In the Flat Field, in 1980, the band had played a John Peel session at the BBC, toured England extensively (and North America selectively), and recorded over a dozen sessions that resulted in three singles and an EP, and ultimately, their debut album, In the Flat Field, one of the most important post-punk recordings in history, and arguably the first "gothic rock" album. The influence of Bauhaus cannot be overstated: In the Flat Field has been re-released on compact disc no less than five times since 1990, and in 2008, it was released on vinyl in various editions no less than four! This Beggar's Banquet Omnibus Edition of the album is a true fetish object as a package. It contains the 24-bit remaster of the original album in its own sleeve with a replica of the original inner sleeve that contained the lyrics for the album's nine tracks, and is held in a rice paper sleeve. In addition, there is a second disc that contains not only the singles issued during the same period (minus "Bela Lugosi's Dead," done for a separate label): "Dark Entries," "Terror Couple Kills Colonel," but also outtakes of album tracks, alternate takes, and original versions of "A God in an Alcove," and the Beck studio original version of their cover of Marc Bolan's "Telegram Sam," to name a few. There are 16 tracks in all, and given how familiar fans are with In the Flat Field, this second disc, so loaded with alternates and outtakes, is a revelatory experience because it offers a portrait of the band struggling with itself, and experimenting, trying to eke out that certain sonic something that would ultimately set them apart and create so many imitators. As if the music weren't enough, Beggar's has included in this semi-long box offering a 48-page book that includes comments from bandmembers, photos, complete lyrics, complete tour date information for 1979 and 1980, and a solidly authoritative and excellent chronological essay by Kevin Brooksbank on the formation and creation of the band, the singles, and the album. It's a prize in itself. Fan will simply not want to live without this one - even if they already own the expanded edition of the album. Disc: 1   1. Double Dare   2. In The Flat Field   3. Peter Murphy - Love Hysteria Peter Murphy - Love Hysteria Having assembled, for touring purposes, what would soon be his formal backing band, the Hundred Men, and more specifically, having found a new key songwriting collaborator in ex-B. Movie keyboardist Paul Statham, Murphy created his most elegant post-Bauhaus effort to date. Love Hysteria had definite Bowie echoes, though the feeling was more late-'70s Berlin-era than Ziggy glam. That said, with his band turning in a variety of bright, lively performances and with sympathetic production from ex-Fall member/arranger Simon Rogers, Murphy matched the music with flair, his voice even more of a passionate croon than a powerful howl. Lead single "All Night Long" was something of an American breakthrough hit; its upbeat rock drive and lush keyboards are a perfect bed for Murphy's performance. Other moments, such as the ringing acoustic/electric guitar combinations on "Indigo Eyes" and "Dragnet Drag," take Murphy even further away from Bauhaus' shadow, though "His Circle and Hers Meet" and "Blind Sublime" have a brusquer energy. The definite highlights of the album are two majestic ballads: "Time Has Got Nothing to Do With It," with a fine Statham synth line matching Murphy's soaring vocals; and "My Last Two Weeks," a simply wonderful romantic sentiment. If his lyrics now sometimes have the feeling of formal philosophical pronouncements, the sense of style with which he sings them saves the performances more often than not. Closing with a fun romp through Iggy Pop's "Funtime," saluting another one of Murphy's old heroes with an appropriately strong vocal and amusing horror-movie samples, Love Hysteria shows Murphy fully coming into his own as a performer. 1. All Night Long 5:44    2. His Circle And Hers Meet 6:01    3. Dragnet Drag 5:49    4. Socrates The Python 6:41    5. Indigo Eyes 5:54    6. Time Has Got Nothing To Do With It 5:20    7. This Mortal Coil - Filigree & Shadow This Mortal Coil - Filigree & Shadow The second album by the 4AD collective headed by label founder Ivo Watts-Russell distills the This Mortal Coil concept somewhat. There's more of a core group now, featuring Simon Raymonde of the Cocteau Twins, producer John Fryer, arranger Martin McCarrick, and Watts-Russell himself, backing a variety of mostly female singers. The double album is nearly half instrumentals (all of them given the traditional 4AD treatment of layers of echo, reverb, and phasing), most of which are pleasant enough but not particularly memorable. The vocal tracks, however, continue the debut's trend of intriguing versions of fascinatingly obscure covers, ranging from Pearls Before Swine's mysteriously beautiful "The Jeweller" (with Scott Walker-like vocals by Dominic Appleton) and Tim Buckley's "I Must Have Been Blind" (sung by Dead Can Dance's Brendan Perry, apparently from the bottom of a very deep well) to Talking Heads' "Drugs" (with a fiery, soulful vocal by Alison Limerick over a harsh, thumping rhythm track) and Colin Newman's "Alone," each of them reinterpreted in the unique This Mortal Coil style. Less focused than It'll End in Tears, Filigree & Shadow is an uneven but often inspired follow-up. 1. Velvet Belly   2. Jeweller   3. Ivy And Neet   4. Meniscus   5. Tears   6. Tarantula   7.
