Blo - Chapters And Phases (the Complete Albums 1973-75) Blo - Chapters And Phases (the Complete Albums 1973-75) Lagos-based trio BLO shook the Nigerian scene to its foundations with their their Afro-rooted rock music. Their live debut in December 1972 found 10,000 new converts chanting "we want BLO" over and over again. Their Afro-delia looked far afield for inspiration: drummer Laolu Akintobi said "we were listening to Grand Funk Railroad and The Isley Brothers and thought we should be able to do this in an African way." A further inspiration was Ginger Baker for whom both Akintobi and BLO's Berkley Jones played and toured with in 1971. BLO's first two albums, 1973's Chapter One and 1975's Phase 2, are amazing fusions of traditional rhythms and American psychedelia that evoke a spacier 'Tago Mago'-era Can. Original copies of each sell for ?200 and up. Chapter One's highlights include the psychedelic instrumental Miss Sagit with its snakey fuzz guitar. Equally far out is Chant To Mother Earth, where a hypnotic three-note bass line tops shuffling drums, choppy guitar and distant chanted vocals. Phase 2's wah wah guitar and funk takes their Afro-delia onto the dance floor. Press reports of the time describe BLO as Africa's first rock band. They had an "electronic cosmic sound that deserves total world-wide attention". Didn't quite happen then but it is now as RPM's Laolu Akintobi-approved reissue of the complete Chapter One and Phase 2 albums - the first-ever CD issue of both albums - follows on the highly acclaimed Nigeria Rock and Funk Special compilations of recent times. 1. Mickey Hart & Zakir Hussain - Global Drum Project Mickey Hart & Zakir Hussain - Global Drum Project It was three decades ago that Mickey Hart stepped out from behind the Grateful Dead and created his first global drum project on Diga Rhythm Band. That album still sounds as fresh and vibrant today as it did in 1976, when it was received more as a curiosity than the world-music prophecy it turned out to be. Hart and his rhythm partner from Diga, tabla titan Zakir Hussain, reworked the concept for their Planet Drum album in 1991, and they now return with Global Drum Project. It's an CD that continues Hart's infatuation with electronic toys and their percussive possibilities as he mixes samples and MIDI-triggered electronics into the works. With Planet Drummers Sikiru Adepoju and Giovanni Hidalgo plus Taufiq Qureshi joining in, there's little doubt that GDP is a groove-centric album. After the exultant opening track "Baba," featuring Babatunde Olatunji, the soul of the original Planet Drum, sampled posthumously, most tracks settle into dark, swampy, steady-state grooves. Sampled rhythmic singing from Zakir punctuates "Under One Groove," while "Heartspace" adds sarangi and sitar for a more Eastern, meditative space. It isn't the virtuoso rhythm workout you might expect, but neither is it the orchestrated percussive percolations of Diga or Planet Drum. Instead, it's a chilled electro-percussive jam session with looping grooves oscillated by electronics and cut with a digital razor. Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart's innovative Planet Drum CD convened some of the world's finest drum talent for a collaboration that won the very first GRAMMY for world music -- bringing together Nigerian drum legend Babatunde Olatunji, Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, Nigerian talking drum ace Sikiru Adepoju, and Puerto Rico's master conguero Giovanni Hidalgo, among others. The 1991 album spent an unprecedented 26 weeks at #1 on the Billboard world music chart, and continues to sell as a perennial favorite. Fifteen years later, the musical partnership of Hart and Hussain -- which began with their groundbreaking 1970s world fusion experiment Diga Rhythm Band -- resumes, with a fresh collaboration of tranced-out grooves, elegant electronic programming and hypnotic tuned percussion and again enlists the great partnership of Adepoju and Hidalgo. This time they are joined by Taufiq Qureshi on percussion & vocals, Niladari Kumar on sitar, Dilshad Khan on sarangi, and the late, great Olatunji in sampled vocals from the original sessions. Elements from Hart's various world music recordings, including the Kaluli tribespeople of Papua New Guinea's rainforest, are woven with the live performances into a danceable, multitextured celebration of rhythm. 1. Baba   2. Kaluli Groove   3. Funky Zena   4. Under One Groove   5. Dances with Wood   6. Heartspace 7. Tars 8. I Can Tell You More

Recorded in 1976. Includes liner notes by Roger Steffens. After spending 12 years as a member of Bob Marley's Wailers, Peter Tosh was eager to break free from the shadow of the legendary frontman. In 1976, he released LEGALIZE IT, still one of the most significant albums in the history of reggae. The title track expresses one of Tosh's many political causes, justifying the legalization of marijuana as a remedy for various medical ailments. "Burial" is one of several tracks that features the talents of the Wailers' stand-out lead guitarist, Al Anderson. Tosh adds his own seasoning to the reggae pot as he incorporates keyboards in "Whatcha Gonna Do" and synthesizers and sound effects on "Igziabeher." "Ketchy Shuby," a sing-along about fooling around, features the background vocal talents of Rita Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Judy Mowatt. Tosh's life ended too early, and LEGALIZE IT is the strongest testament to his legacy. Take a listen, and share the spirit of his genius.

Serge Gainsbourg - Songs On Page One (remastered Debut Album+live Tracks &more) Serge Gainsbourg - Songs On Page One (remastered Debut Album+live Tracks &more) There are many standard-issue personae to which an aspiring rock star might be drawn, but one has always been cooler, darker and sexier than all the rest. It is that of the artist who single-mindedly pursues his creative muse while embracing the full panoply of self-destructive, decadent, badboy behaviour: heavy drinking, frequent drug use, committed womanising, a general fuck-you attitude to both public and media, a casual disregard for society's sacred cows and taboos, and a self-belief bordering on the messianic. For three turbulent decades Serge Gainsbourg heroically exemplified all of the above - and much more. He wrote and directed four controversial movies, he published a scurrilous novel, his records were often denounced as obscene and he was perpetually embroiled in scandal, whether for turning up drunk on a TV show and offering to f**k fellow guest Whitney Houston, recording a reggae version of Le Marseillaise, burning a 500 franc banknote on prime-time TV, or making a decidedly queasy video with his 13-year-old daughter Charlotte to promote their single, Lemon Incest. Summarising his approach to life and art, he said: "Without controversy it would all be very boring" and "For me, provocation is oxygen." The EL edition comprises his shockingly brilliant debut album, a live track from the same period transmitted on Radio France and fine versions of songs from this momentous first album recorded with commercial success by Parisian comtemporaries Mich?le Arnaud and Jean Claude Pascal Serge Gainsbourg has been one of, if not the, major single international influence on British and American independent pop music; Portishead, Franz Ferdinand, Tricky, Jarvis Cocker, Beck, Arcade Fire, Placebo, PJ Harvey, Brett Anderson, Mick Harvey, Momus and Belle and Sebastian have all claimed him as mentor In France, Gainsbourg is nothing less than an institution. As Jane Birkin put it recently: "Now French culture is talked of as before and after Serge."
