Aretha Franklin - Live At The Fillmore West (remastered 1971 Live 2-cd Set) Aretha Franklin - Live At The Fillmore West (remastered 1971 Live 2-cd Set) On March 5-7, 1971, the one and only Queen of Soul headlined Bill Graham's world-famous rock venue Fillmore West. Aretha Franklin - Respect - The Very Best Of Aretha Franklin (2-cd Set) Aretha Franklin - Respect - The Very Best Of Aretha Franklin (2-cd Set) Respect features all the classic songs by the original Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Rooted in a gospel tradition that was to inform her soul-charged sound, her impact on pop music, and in particular American pop music was profound. It was the run of late-60s Atlantic hits featured here ("Respect", "Chain of Fools", "I Say A Little Prayer") that made her a star but as this "best of" shows, there was plenty more to come. Aretha was discovered all over again by a new generation in the 80s thanks to her role and performance ("Think") in hit musical The Blues Brothers. Riding high on a wave of success, duets with latter day icons followed like the epic "I Knew You Were Waiting" with stubble-faced George Michael and the anthemic "Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves" with self-proclaimed diva Annie Lennox. Respect is certainly due to the remarkable talent of Aretha Franklin and this double disc anthology thoroughly represents the diva in her full majesty. Disc: 1   1. Respect   2. Think   3. Betty Davis - Betty Davis (remastered W / 3 Bonus Tracks) Betty Davis - Betty Davis (remastered W / 3 Bonus Tracks) Betty Davis' debut was an outstanding funk record, driven by her aggressive, no-nonsense songs and a set of howling performances from a crack band. Listeners wouldn't know it from the song's title, but for the opener, "If I'm in Luck I Might Get Picked Up," Davis certainly doesn't play the wallflower; she's a woman on the prowl, positively luring the men in and, best of all, explaining exactly how she does it: "I said I'm wigglin' my fanny, I'm raunchy dancing, I'm-a-doing it doing it/This is my night out." "Game Is My Middle Name" begins at a midtempo lope, but really breaks through on the chorus, with the Pointer Sisters and Sylvester backing up each of her assertions. As overwhelming as Davis' performances are, it's as much the backing group as Davis herself that makes her material so powerful (and believable). Reams of underground cred allowed her to recruit one of the tightest rhythm sections ever heard on record (bassist Larry Graham and drummer Greg Errico, both veterans of Sly & the Family Stone), plus fellow San Francisco luminaries like master keyboardist Merl Saunders and guitarists Neal Schon or Douglas Rodriguez (both associated with Santana at the time). Graham's popping bass and the raw, flamboyant, hooky guitar lines of Schon or Rodriguez make the perfect accompaniment to these songs; Graham's slinky bass is the instrumental equivalent of Davis' vocal gymnastics, and Rodriguez makes his guitar scream during "Your Man My Man." It's hard to tell whether the musicians are pushing so hard because of Davis' performances or if they're egging each other on, but it's an unnecessary question. Everything about Betty Davis' self-titled debut album speaks to Davis the lean-and-mean sexual predator, from songs to performance to backing, and so much the better for it. All of which should've been expected from the woman who was too wild for Miles Davis.

Betty Davis - Is It Love Or Desire (high-definition Gatefold Vinyl Lp) Betty Davis - Is It Love Or Desire (high-definition Gatefold Vinyl Lp) Legendary '70s R&B diva Betty Davis is currently in the midst of a long-overdue resurgence, and with good reason. The charismatic funk/soul iconoclast's vintage work retains a timeless blend of sex and substance that establishes Davis as both a musical visionary and a worldclass badass. The current resurgence of interest in Davis' classic work makes Sundazed Music's vinyl release of Is It Love or Desire a timely one indeed. Recorded in 1976, following the artist's landmark albums Betty Davis, They Say I'm Different and Nasty Gal, Is It Love or Desire was unexpectedly shelved. The artist retreated from the spotlight soon after, and Is It Love or Desire remained unheard by the public for more than three decades. It has never been released- or even bootlegged-until now. Finally available to Davis' stillgrowing fan base, Is It Love or Desire is a revelation. Recorded at Louisiana's remote Studio in the Country with Davis' skintight band Funk House, the ten-song album contains some of the most powerful and personal music of the artist's career, with such titles as "It's So Good," "Whorey Angel" and "Crashin' From Passion" ranking with Davis' most memorable work. This first-ever vinyl edition of Is It Love or Desire maintains Sundazed's usual exacting quality standards. Mastered from the original analog tapes, the album is pressed on high quality, high-definition 180 gram vinyl, and features new cover art and previously unseen photos. TRACK LIST: 1. Is It Love or Desire 2. It's So Good 3. Whorey Angel 4. Crashin' From Passion 5. When Romance Says Goodbye 6. Bottom of the Barrel 7. Stars Starve, You Know 8. Let's Get Personal 9. Bar Hoppin' 10. For My Man

Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different (remastered W/ 4 Bonus Tracks) Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different (remastered W/ 4 Bonus Tracks) Betty Davis' second full-length featured a similar set of songs as her debut, though with Davis herself in the production chair and a radically different lineup. The openers, "Shoo-B-Doop and Cop Him" and "He Was a Big Freak," are big, blowsy tunes with stop-start funk rhythms and Davis in her usual persona as the aggressive sexual predator. On the title track, she reminisces about her childhood and compares herself to kindred spirits of the past, a succession of blues legends she holds fond -- including special time for Bessie Smith, Chuck Berry, and Robert Johnson. A pair of unknowns, guitarist Cordell Dudley and bassist Larry Johnson, do a fair job of replacing the stars from her first record. As a result, They Say I'm Different is more keyboard-dominated than her debut, with prominent electric piano, clavinet, and organ from Merl Saunders, Hershall Kennedy, and Tony Vaughn. The material was even more extreme than on her debut; "He Was a Big Freak" featured a prominent bondage theme, while "Your Mama Wants Ya Back" and "Don't Call Her No Tramp" dealt with prostitution, or at least inferred it. With the exception of the two openers, though, They Say I'm Different lacked the excellent songs and strong playing of her debut; an explosive and outr? record, but more a variation on the same theme she'd explored before. Featuring a futuristic cover predating David Bowie's science fiction funk, Betty Davis crafted an inspired second album, leading with 'Shoo-B Doop and Cop Him' (later sampled by Ice Cube) and made up of classic cuts like 'Don't Call Her No Tramp' and the mesmerizing punk soul of 'He Was A Big Freak'. This was the first album Betty produced entirely by herself and she really sharpened up her songs and performances for it. This 1974 masterpiece will finally receive a long-overdue proper reissue with Part Two of Oliver Wang's liner notes and an endless array of photos and archival material, plus a number of previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Booker T & The Mgs - The Booker T Set Booker T & The Mgs - The Booker T Set Digitally remastered by George Horn (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). THE BOOKER T. SET finds the legendary Stax instrumental quartet keeping pace with the times. The track list here consists mostly of covers of popular contemporary songs, including "Mrs. Robinson," "Light My Fire," and "Michelle." While the group's original compositions (almost always written collaboratively and usually outshining their cover versions) are sorely missed, the band is musically as in step as ever, with notably fine work from in-the-pocket rhythm masters bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn and drummer Al Jackson. As always, the group's chemistry is fueled by the dialogue between Steve Cropper's spare, wiry guitar leads and Booker T.'s thick, churning organ. THE BOOKER T. SET finds the funk coming full circle with the band's treatments of the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing" and Sly Stone's "Sing a Simple Song." The arrangements here are also interesting, showing how the band can play it straight, as on Burt Bacharach's "This Guy's in Love With You," or inventive, as on the low, almost boogie-woogie groove of "Lady Madonna." Altogether, SET is a musically strong, representative document of the MG's late '60s sound. Includes liner notes by Phyl Garland. Booker T. & The MG's: Booker T. Curtis Mayfield - Live! (remastered 1971 Album W / 2 Bonus Tracks) Curtis Mayfield - Live! (remastered 1971 Album W / 2 Bonus Tracks) Curtis/Live! is, simply, one of the greatest concert albums ever cut on a soul artist, and one of the legendary live albums of all time. Cut in January of 1971 during four nights at The Bitter End (then Greenwich Village's leading music venue) in New York, the resulting double LP transcended any expectations in both its programming and execution - Mayfield performed numbers off of the Curtis album ("[Don't Worry] If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go"), as well as exciting and urgent new versions of songs originally performed by the Impressions ("We're a Winner," "People Get Ready," "Gypsy Woman"), plus a very moving R&B version of "We've Only Just Begun." This is all beautifully stripped-down work by a quintet consisting of Mayfield (vocals, guitar), Craig McMullen (guitar), Tyrone McCullen (drums), "Master" Henry Gibson (percussion), and Joseph "Lucky" Scott (bass) - a solid, intense performance, with quietly elegant guitar playing against a rock-solid rhythm section, as Impressions hits are rethought and reconfigured in a new context, and Mayfield's early solo repertory comes to life in newer, longer live versions.      1  Mighty Mighty (Spade and Whitey)  Mayfield  6:56          2   Rap   :26          3  I Plan to Stay a Believer  Mayfield  3:16          4  We're a Winner  Mayfield  4:47          5  Rap   :51         6  We've Only Just Begun  Nichols, Williams  3:44         7  People Get Ready  Mayfield  3:47          8  Rap   :34          9  Stare and Stare  Mayfield  6:12         10  Check Out Your Mind  Mayfield  3:53          11  Gypsy Woman  Mayfield  3:48          12  The Makings of You  Mayfield  3:28          13  Rap   2:01         14  We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue  Mayfield  6:46        15  (Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go  Mayfield  9:27          16  Stone Junkie  Mayfield  8:05         17  Superfly  Mayfield  3:56          18  Mighty Mighty (Spade and Whitey) [Single Version]
