Bee Gees - Odessa (remastered 1969 Album- Deluxe 3cd Set) Bee Gees - Odessa (remastered 1969 Album- Deluxe 3cd Set) Three-disc expanded Deluxe Edition of Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb's 1969 double-LP pop masterpiece, presented in deluxe packaging that reproduces the original release's red-flocked cover, including a poster and sticker. Disc one features the original stereo mixes of the title's 17 song sequence. Disc two marks the U.S. recording debut of the original mono mixes of the same 17 songs. Bonus disc 3 boasts 22 previously unreleased recordings, including 20 alternate takes and demos plus two songs not featured on the original album-'Pity' and 'Nobody's Someone. ODESSA is widely regarded as the Bee Gees' finest pre-SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER moment, an elaborate (the original LP had a red velveteen cover), baroque-pop masterpiece on the order of the Zombies' ODESSEY AND ORACLE or even the Beatles' SGT. PEPPER. ...    Full DescriptionThe ambitious arrangements and elegant-but accessible songcraft of tunes like "Melody Fair," "Lamplight," and "First of May" certainly bears out this estimation. Accordingly, ODESSA has been given a deluxe treatment here, with two full discs of bonus material appended to the original album. While there are a couple of never-before-heard songs amid the bonus tracks, most of discs two and three are occupied by mono mixes and alternate versions of the album's classic tunes, offering fresh glimpses of a cult classic. ODESSA stands as one of the great British pop albums of the '60s, right up alongside such tours de force as SGT. PEPPER, ODYSSEY AND ORACLE, and S.F. SORROW. In fact, while it's full of elegant baroque pop gems, ODESSA's range even extends beyond its aforementioned peers, delving over the course of its double-length into everything from Gospel to country. Songs like "Melody Fair" employ all the pop smarts the Gibbs earned early in their career and apply them to a much more sophisticated scope of song structure. The seven minute-plus title song is a centerpiece here, an epic account of a ship gone astray, full of changes in texture, tempo and dynamics, veering dangerously close to artsong, but (as is part of the Bee Gees' magic) always staying on the right side of infectiousness 1. Bobby Darin - Sings The Shadows Of Your Smile/in A Broadway Bag Bobby Darin - Sings The Shadows Of Your Smile/in A Broadway Bag In 1966, five very different songs were nominated for Academy Awards. On The Shadow of Your Smile, which was released in March of that year, Bobby Darin flexed his musical muscles and covered them all. The first five tracks on The Shadow of Your Smile are Oscar nominees and were arranged by Shorty Rogers. "The Shadow of Your Smile" is a tender love song from The Sandpiper, which starred Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The sensitive "I Will Wait for You" was in the French film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Two songs were in comedies of the day: "The Sweetheart Tree" from The Great Race and "The Ballad of Cat Ballou" from the Western satire Cat Ballou. And some have called "What's New Pussycat?," from the movie of the same name, the "wildest song ever nominated." Darin showcases his dynamic range on pop standards on the rest of the record. The remaining six songs were arranged by Richard Wess and include songs by Ira Gershwin and George Gershwin ("Liza"), Harold Arlen, and Yip Harburg ("It's Only a Paper Moon"), Oscar Hammerstein ("Lover Come Back to Me), and even a Darin original ("Rainin'"). The Shadow of Your Smile has all of Bobby Darin's hallmark traits: schmaltz, swing, and humor. It was his first album for Atlantic Records. Diablo Records includes four bonus tracks to The Shadow of Your Smile, but does not identify their origins: "We Didn't Ask to Be Brought Here," "Funny What Love Can Do," "The Breaking Point," and "Silver Dollar." Recommended if you like well-written show tunes interpreted with upbeat bravado. In other words, if you like Bobby Darin the Entertainer. In a Broadway Bag, released in June 1966, was Darin's second LP for Atlantic. Though The Shadow of Your Smile included five songs from Oscar-nominated films and a number of other standards, it is on In a Broadway Bag where Darin took the concept to its logical end. In a Broadway Bag is a complete album of outstanding songs from current and recent hit musicals of the time. It begins with "Mame," which, as a single before Mame had even opened on Broadway, became one of the biggest hits of the year. As a result, the song became a staple of Darin's live act, and often opened his show. Darin's success with "Mame" inspired him to learn more about Broadway shows and to compile In a Broadway Bag. The LP showcases upbeat songs including "Don't Rain on My Parade" from Funny Girl, "I Believe in You from How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, "It's Today" (also from Mame), "Everybody Has the Right to Be Wrong" from Skyscraper, and "Feeling Good" from The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd. In a Broadway Bag has its share of ballads as well, including Jerry Orbach's tune "Try to Remember" from The Fantastiks, "Night Song" from Golden Boy, "Once Upon a Time" from All American, "I'll Only Miss Her" from Skyscraper, and "The Other Half of Me" from I Had a Ball. [The 2007 Edsel edition included bonus tracks.]

Brian Wilson - Presents Smile Brian Wilson - Presents Smile The Greatest Album That Never Was finally is. The Beach Boys' uncompleted 1967 album Smile has remained the elusive touchstone of Brian Wilson's brilliant, star-crossed career for decades. Artistic Holy Grail and troubling professional Waterloo for Wilson, a tantalizing prism of unfulfilled promise to his loyal cadre of fans, its story has become pop music's Rashomon. Finally completed via spring 2004 recordings with his stellar, longtime touring band (none of the original '60s sessions were used, though they've been recreated here with often stunning authenticity), it's arguably as alien to contemporary pop as it might have seemed in its intended '67 context--even to ears freshly primed by the glories of Pet Sounds. Collaborator Van Dyke Parks's impressionistic, often mischievous lyrics conjure a collage of arcane 19th-century Americana that's equal parts artful ellipse and aloof nostalgia. But wed to Wilson's innovative composition and recording techniques (echoing beat author William Burroughs's fabled cut 'n' paste methodology and exemplified by the modular "Good Vibrations"), the resulting semisuite confections challenge the boundaries of both song and album form, but with an insouciant charm that's as different from Pet Sounds as that landmark was from "I Get Around." Turns out those hypothetical comparisons to Sgt. Pepper's weren't so far off the mark. --Jerry McCulley 1. Our Prayer/Gee   2. Heroes and Villains   3. Roll Plymouth Rock   4. Barnyard   5. Brian Wilson - Presents Smile (deluxe 2 Dvd Set) Brian Wilson - Presents Smile (deluxe 2 Dvd Set) 250 minutes Smile? In 1966, the legendary abandoned Beach Boys' album and "teenage symphony to God" left its visionary, Brian Wilson, with the devil to pay. Disc One of this double DVD set offers David Leaf's glorious documentary "Beautiful Dreamer", interviewing all those involved with the project's development (save, bizarrely, any of the surviving Beach Boys, least of all Smile's most trenchant naysayer Mike Love) and charting Brian Wilson's ascendancy to the cusp of creative immortality and subsequent crash-and-burn to a bedridden, burnt-out recluse. In the South Pole-style "production race" with The Beatles for popular music's brave new frontier (a contest more self-justificatingly important to Wilson than to Lennon/McCartney) it was to be The Beatles who planted the flag and Wilson who perished in the snow; Smile was to be Brian Wilson's nemesis. The albums' eventual completion and re-recording (hats off to Brian Wilson's musical sidekicks The Wondermints) in 2003 was the happiest and unlikeliest conclusion to pop music's most fascinating and infuriating chapter. The entire live performance of Smile in Los Angeles - beautifully filmed on Disc 2 - is a fitting happy ending. The work - especially the waxing and waning chorales of the "Child Is Father Of The Man" section - is a marvel; beautiful, bold, coherent and deft enough to leave the myth - the great "what if?" of 20th Century music history - intact. --Kevin Maidment Disc 1 - - Feature-Length Documentary - BEAUTIFUL DREAMER - BRIAN WILSON & THE STORY OF SMiLE Bonus material includes - - "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" performance - Aftershow featurette from the Royal Festival Hall, London, February 2004 - Interview Highlights - Theatrical Trailer AUDIO FEATURES - - 1)DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 SURROUND - 2)DOLBY DIGITAL 2.0 STEREO - 3)ISOLATED SOUNDTRACK Subtitles - English, French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese Disc 2 - - SMiLE Live Performance - Our Prayer/Gee - Heroes And Villains - Roll Plymouth Rock - Barnyard - Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine - Cabin Essence - Wonderful - Song For Children - Child Is Father Of The Man - Surf's Up - I'm In Great Shape/ - I Wanna Be Around/Workshop - Vega-Tables - On A Holiday - Wind Chimes - Mrs. O'Leary's Cow - In Blue Hawaii - Good Vibrations Bonus material includes - - Solo Piano Performances - Photo Gallery - Recording Sessions Featurette - "Heroes And Villains" Contest-Winning Video DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 SURROUND MIX LINEAR PCM STEREO SUBTITLES -

David And Jonathan - Best Of David And Jonathan (complete 1966-1968 Recordings) David And Jonathan - Best Of David And Jonathan (complete 1966-1968 Recordings) David and Jonathan , the hit artist alter ego of songwriters Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway. As writers between 1965 and 1973 they wrote 25 UK top ten hits , plus many others around the world, for the likes of the Fortunes, Cliff Richard, the Hollies, Blue Mink, the Drifters and one of the biggest 'in the world ever' as Virgin would say, in 'I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing'. Ironically David and Jonathans own biggest hit was a cover of the Beatles 'Michelle', which made No.11 in the UK, and No.18 in the US. Their link with the Beatles was not so surprising however given that they were picked up as artists by producer George Martin, who produced the majority of their recordings for his Air Studios set up, during a peak period between 1965 and 1968. It yielded two more international hits in their own songs 'Lovers Of The World Unite', and 'How Bitter The Taste Of Love'. Musically Cook and Greenaway recorded in a similar vein to the Ivy League with close harmonies over beat backings. Their vocal skills were further in demand as session singers, such as backing the first Paul and Barry Ryan hits, Peter Sellers on his memorable take on the Beatles 'A Hard Days Night', and the lead on the title song to the cult movie 'Modesty Blaise'. During their period as David and Jonathan, Cook and Greenaway recorded early versions of many of their songs that became hits for others, such as 'You've Got Your Troubles', 'This Golden Ring', 'Softly Whispering I Love You', 'Somethings Gotten Hold of My Heart', 'Green Grass'. All the hits and versions of hit songs for others, mentioned above, are present on this new compilation of the best of David And Jonathan, compiled with the assistance of messers Cook and Greenaway. Only collection of David and Jonathan on the market and includes all the UK and US hits, alongside writers' versions of their hits for others. Some recordings are on CD for the first time.
